We recently stayed at the Renaissance Battle House Hotel in Mobile, AL, on March 26-28h, 2024. We are Marriott Bonvoy member for many many years and I would typically not make a public comment on a Marriott hotel. However, the experience we had at the Renaissance was a big disappointment. The room we had was nice and comfortable. The biggest drawback however, was being awoken on our first morning at 6 am with sounds of voices and a conversation so audible that I thought the people conversing were actually in our room. The conversation I was hearing audibly was coming from the room beside ours. If the conversation was not in a different language (not English), then I would definitely have understood the conversation in what appears to some sort of a meeting or loud phone call. It lasted for about half hour. I mentioned this incident to the assistant manager that morning as we were waiting for our valeted car to arrive. By the way, the other room beside us also had coughing and sneezing noises that were heard in our room. I told the front desk assistant manager (date March 27/24) that I was concerned that if we could hear people in both rooms beside us, then they could clearly hear us also, which is not very private.
The following morning, we were again awoken at 5:30 am by 3 city crew trucks parked below our window (we were on the 4th fl/historic side). I emailed by chat the front desk and found out that the city crew were pumping water out of the building and nothing the hotel staff can do to remedy this. This went on until about 6 am. Then wouldn't you know, at shortly after 6 am, a phone conversation next room started again. We again messaged the front desk and they sent "Loss Prevention" staff to go to the room next to us to ask them to keep the noise down.
I have screen shots on my phone of my messages with front desk, in case Marriott would like to address these unfortunate incidents during our stay.
We checked out earlier than the planned time on March 28th, when speaking with the front desk staff (she identified herself as the Supervisor, when I asked for the manager), we settled our account that morning and the Supervisor advised me that to compensate for the inconveniences they would return our 50,400 Marriott Bonvoy points to our account. It has been 4 days since our check out and the points have not been returned - another...
Read moreI recently stayed at the Renaissance Hotel in Mobile and was generally impressed by its exquisite design and prime location. However, there are a few points worth mentioning.
Despite the high cost, the hotel does not provide a welcome package or even complimentary water. While coffee is available in the room, you will need to ensure you have your own water.
On a positive note, the reception staff were exceptionally friendly, professional, and courteous, which made a great first impression. However, the restaurant experience was mixed. Some waitresses were not very friendly, though the gentleman at the front who seated us was both friendly and professional. The evening entertainment, featuring different musicians, was a delightful plus.
My room on the sixth floor (619) had a clean and beautiful decor, though the view facing the parking lot was less than ideal. The bathroom was clean, but there were two issues: the toilet and toilet paper holder were too close together, making it awkward to use, especially for larger individuals. Additionally, I encountered ants around the sink. Thankfully, the staff responded immediately, and maintenance resolved the issue swiftly and professionally.
A special mention goes to the lady who cleaned my room throughout the week. She was the sweetest person ever, and I wish I knew her name to commend her directly for her excellent service.
Parking in the garage comes with a fee. The fitness center on the 4th floor is well-equipped with Techno equipment, and overlooks the swimming pool. They provide towels, headphones, cleaning wipes, and there’s a water fountain. The gym includes weights, benches, mats, and a large mirror, which are all appreciated. The bathrooms on this floor were also clean and well-maintained.
The hotel’s decor is stunning, and its location is excellent, allowing easy access to restaurants, museums, stores, and other downtown amenities. Mobile's rich history adds to the charm of the area. For families with small children, there's a Chick-fil-A on Royal Street, just a minute's walk from the hotel, which closes around 7 or 7:30 PM.
Overall, while there are areas for improvement, particularly regarding amenities and some aspects of cleanliness, my stay was pleasant and the hotel's many positive attributes made up for the minor...
Read moreThis was our first time staying in a Marriot establishment, we have always been a Hilton family but decided this time to make a change and wow, we were blown away. From the booking process online through the app to check in everything was streamlined and quick to make getting to your room very easy and quick. When you arrive you are given the option of Valet or Self-Parking. We chose to self-park at the attached parking garage next door. With easy access to the hotel from the garage it was just a short walk to the check in desk where we were promptly greeted and welcomed. Check in was very fast and within 10 minutes we were on our way up to our room. It was comforting to see the security measures in place to help us feel safe. From the 24th floor the view was amazing. The only problem we had at arrival was that the air conditioning was not running and the room was very warm. The room was very spacious even with the two beds and the small but very comfortable couch in the room. The bathroom was exceptionally clean and well stocked for our stay, the closet with room safe was great. The next morning we got up and checked out the fitness center on the 4th floor and found it to be everything we needed to get a great workout in before starting our day. The shower had amazing water pressure and what seemed like an endless supply of hot water! Being located where the hotel is it is a very short walk to explore historic downtown Mobile and just a short drive to great things like the Battleship Alabama, and just a short drive to Gulf Shores, Orange Beach or Dauphin Island. The only knock I can give is the upcoming change that Marriot is planning to make in reference to early checkout charges. I sincerely hope that the Marriot corporation will reconsider this and not implement this as I don’t think this is a fair practice to charge your customers if they decide to leave early or at least that’s the way I understood what was about to happen. Now let me me be clear that DID NOT happen to us this time but was told that this was coming soon. This policy if implemented could sway our decision to whether or not to stay at another Marriot location. Other than the air conditioning not being on and this new policy being considered this establishment is exceptional and you will not regret choosing...
