Casual place to grab breakfast / brunch / lunch.
My girlfriend and I decided to skip Pancake Pantry's long line for a quick last meal in Nashville at Fido. We arrived at 8:30 AM on Memorial Day, and there was almost no line and plenty of available seating. There was also plenty of parking spots along the street and in a nearby private lot (2 hr limit for the street parking - not sure about the lot).
Fido is self-service: order at the front, take a puppy buzzer, receive your food from the runner, and take care of your own napkins and beverages. The puppy buzzers are adorable - with a cute puppy photo and a short "about me" for the puppy.
My girlfriend and I have an established ordering system for brunch: one savory, one sweet, and one coffee to share. At Fido, we ordered the Pete's Breakfast with Chorizo, Sweet Potato French Toast, and an Iced Americano. We also grabbed a Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffin to-go (their display of baked goods - cookies, muffins, cake slices - is the most tempting thing ever).
Pete's Breakfast with Chorizo - Yummy! Pretty much a breakfast taco. I think I ate too fast to notice the chorizo, but the eggs were perfectly moist and cheesy. It paired well with the flour tortillas and the side of salsa and sour cream. Not the best I ever had, but no regrets. I really liked the texture of the hashbrowns - slightly crisp edges, but otherwise soft.
Sweet Potato French Toast - More like Sweet Potato Pound Cake. I honestly do not think this dish fits the definition of french toast. We enjoyed the dish nonetheless. Very good with the side of whipped cream. Note that it is extremely rich and heavy (like a pound cake). I honestly did not need any of the syrup, because it was too much. In the end, we took half a "slice' to-go, because we started getting sick from the sweetness. If you love cake for breakfast, order this!
Iced Americano - Decent. Nothing to blow me away. Better than Starbucks, but cannot compare to some other coffee shops.
Overall, we enjoyed our quick brunch in the casual cafe environment. Great selection of both sweet and savory. I'd definitely return for a quick coffee and a...
Read moreI used to come to Fido all the time when I lived in the neighborhood, but today was a very different experience than what I was used to.
My first shock was the insane prices. A friend and I were going for a work session and wanted to get some food. A basic egg scramble and a latte cost me $21 and some change (before tip). A drip coffee with refills cost $5. I repeat, a DRIP coffee, with refills (which normally are included for free at any other restaurant), cost more than a plain latte. We sat here looking at our phones to see if there was anywhere else close by that might be a better option. We ended up just resigning to the fact we'd be paying far more than we had expected.
I know 21st as a whole has gotten more bougie, and I assume Fido felt they were given the chance to increase their prices because of that. Unfortunately, the quality has not increased and they still serve normal cafe fare that doesn't seem worthy of the price difference.
The service was friendly and quick, which was appreciated, and I got my latte within a minute or two of sitting down. But my latte wasn't hot, only a bit warm. It didn't seem to be physically possible for it to cool down that much in that short of time, so I have to assume they either didn't steam the milk properly or cold milk was added to it. However, I will take the blame for not letting them know about it right away to give them the chance to fix it.
My scramble was good but nothing special. The salsa and sour cream looked half used. I'm sure that's from spooning them into the containers but it wasn't a good look.
The atmosphere was good and similar to what I remember, but it was very cold inside to the point both my friend and I needed to keep our jackets on.
Overall, Fido has a lot of the same character it's had for years, but I can't see myself returning while the prices are as high as they are. If it were a nicer brunch spot, I would be far less concerned. But given that they still seem to position themselves as a regular neighborhood coffee shop, I can't help but nitpick every detail if they are choosing to charge...
Read moreBeen here several times just for coffee, and I like it, but I'm no coffee snob. And I really like the whole style and vibe of the place. Its trendy and a bit hipster, but not too much, and the chairs are comfy enough to sit and catch up with friends for a while. I also like the a la carte style of service, that way you don't have to wait for someone to come take your order and you get to pick where you want to sit.
But alas, this review is for the burger experience. I came here hungry and prepared to try the burger that I had heard good things about. First off, this is definitely not a traditional burger - it is a mixture of ground beef and lamb, which is something I had never tried or made. Surprisingly, it is a great mix, and it was cooked just to the right point which was a plus. The toppings for the burger are cheese, a fried onion, lettuce, and something else.... fennel? It really gave the burger an interest flavor. To be honest, I was just so surprised by the lamb/beef mix that it all kind of just melted in my mouth as I ignored the person I was there with.
My only criticism would be that the sweet potato fries - my favorite side with burgers- aren't particularly good here. Maybe it's just the couple of times I had them, but they seem really soft, almost uncooked. Aren't they supposed to be crunchy on the outside, warm on the inside, and delicious all over with a hint of cinnamon?
Overall, amazing burger, cool place, and would definitely be five stars if they had better sweet...
