Meh. Was hoping to find a great French Patisserie in the French Quarter. Instead we found this place. It was mostly just good, not bad and definitely not great. Easy walk from the French Market and Jackson Square. Tried a half dozen or so of the pastries as well as the Spinach Quiche. The quiche was pretty good, and a nice flaky crust. Good flavor but the microwaving to heat it up gave it a slightly rubbery texture. The laminated pastries though, ugh. VERY bready! Whoever was handling their lamination definitely needs to go somewhere and learn proper lamination. Anything with laminated dough was all the same, bad to mediocre. You can see from the pictures that the Croissants look like something you get from a can made by Pillsbury. The Apple filled croissant tasted like the filling was straight from a can. They had some really cute pastries and cakes they call "animals" that we didn't try. The star of the show was the Tarte au Citron (Lemon Tart). The tart shell was good a flaky. The lemon filling was excellent. The meringue was tasty and piped well. Just a little over torched which gave it a slightly bitter taste. Overall a very good lemon tart and I would order it again. The atmosphere was wonderful and they had a fantastic courtyard. Most of the service was very good. The biggest complaint, and reason for only 2 stars on service was the lady at the register. Didn't greet us and seemed bored and could care less. Did not help with recommendations and was uninterested in answering any questions. Sorry to be a bother ma'am. We'll just go elsewhere next time. Would I recommend? Hmmm. If you are going for croissants or laminated pastry or the highest quality of pastry, no, I would not recommend. If you are looking for a place close to the French Quarter and nice atmosphere but food quality and service don't matter then yes, I...
Read moreThey are busy and do sell out so don't wait until 3 pm to go. BUT if you do buy whatever is left. Hard to believe but I've been going since 1992 and EVERYTHING is fantastic. This is an original French Pastry Chef's shop so ah ya go to France or stuff your face every day here until you can't walk. They can sell to any of the high end restaurants they want and make $ on the side as a retail cafe from what I see/taste. The bakers are still here even though there's a new Local Pastry Chef owner. My favorites are spinach cream sandwich which was a daily baker's special--I bought the last two and flew 1 back-ate at Work the next day while everyone wanted to know where "That" came from. So it was all that was left, and I HATE cooked spinach...well, I did/still do...But, as I said, it was the only entrée type thing left to buy and they've always delivered out of this world pastries and sandwiches. I mean you have to trust a world class baker!. It had none of that bitter bite and of course out of this world cream. I spent every summer on uncle's dairy farm so if I say they have good cream--it is indeed really good. My grandma housed and fed that uncle every day of the week, pasteurizing the fresh milk by the sink. I hated her spinach and "greens'' for decades until she stopped cooking. These bakers know what they're doing! No hard crap like at Du Monde Brick o' Turd. Drop those and walk the short blocks to 617 Ursulines Ave. Oh-the coffee was great too! U just can't find these pastry bakery gems...
Read moreSuch a beautiful French cafe/patisserie. I've been several times before but not in several years. I had not been hanging out in the quarter much during daylight hours even though it's the best time. I was passing through on my way to pub crawl down Tchoup and needed to start off correctly with some breakfast. A croissant is a must, plain or flavored you can't go wrong. Other than that come in with a budget or a quantity limit cause everything looks so good. Things can quickly get out of hand if you're not careful. I went with a plain butter croissant and the fruit tart. The croissant was everything you'd expect. Rich, buttery, flaky...all the adjectives. And then the fruit tart, like whoa. Same list of French adjectives, just with fruit on top, and not too sweet. Seriously perfect, almost made me wish I drank coffee. They do serve hot breakfast, eggs, meats, potatoes just more fancy. And being a cafe the caffeinated beverages are really good, I do wish they served loose hot tea instead of bagged and/or had green tea flavors I like. But you can always do what I did and walk around the corner to the lantern for a bloody to start your day the New Orleans way. It's large with plenty of seating although they will still fill up. It's currently too hot to make use of their courtyard which is pleasant with the...
