Well who would not want to eat at a restaurant named after a famous New Orleans dish- Pain Perdu? Let me begin by saying the building and décor are beautiful old French New Orleans. The space felt very pleasing, sunny, and inviting. The staff..... well bless their hearts, they seemed lost in the headlights. The food was sub-par for New Orleans where you better be good buddy or adios. So we both started with plain jane lattes which we both found to be quite good. I ask the waitress some specifics about our delicious lattes and her response was....." it comes from a machine over there". Well I delved a little deeper and she simply was lost in the headlights again. Anyway we both had savory crepes- me Florentine and my spouse Mushroom, onion, peppers, spinach, and chevre. Now I have eaten my fair share of crepes in the past (Defunct Petunias in the Quarter served divine, light crepes) and these things were somewhere between an omelet and a crepe and not really to my liking. I must say the ingredients of the crepe themselves were somewhat complex and tasty. It was like a different taste sensation with each bite. The side dish of fruit was good and the sunny side eggs came out as I ordered. My spouse had over easy eggs and he did not experience horrific gastritis as did I a few hours after leaving the Quarter, so I suspect that my eggs were just a bit too under cooked. Another thing I liked about French Toast was that they brought out a carafe of iced water which reminded me of Paris as did the décor to some extent. So to summarize: the décor is lovely, the staff is rather inexperienced, the food was overall average, and the bill...
Read moreI was excited to try this place and really wanted to like it. The pictures online look amazing. There were 5 of us with 3 other couples total in the restaurant. The waitress took a long time to acknowledge us, but when she arrived she was exceptionally friendly and helpful with the menu. We ordered our meals and then she disappeared for quite a while. Eventually she brought our drinks and said our food would be up soon, it was not. She disappeared from the floor again, and we waited and waited. It's not like we ordered complicated dishes. I had the prosciutto toast, my husband ordered classic breakfast with bacon, eggs, grits, and a side of French toast. My daughter had strawberry chocolate crepes, my son and son in law had chicken and waffles. When we finally got our food everything was cold. I think she forgot to put in my order, or there was a mix-up, and I had to wait even longer. I suppose my prosciutto Toast was supposed to be served cold? The prosciutto and ricotta were icebox cold and the toast was not crisp at all. Room temp would have been perfect. The crepes were rubbery, the grits were pasty, the French Toast was beautiful and would had been good if it had some crispness to it, but no. I tasted a bit of it and felt bad for my husband who loves French Toast. The chicken on top of the waffle was barely warm. I was so disappointed in this place, so no, we won't be going back again. I know places can have a bad day, but there were far too many mess-ups to trust they would be spot on at all. Sad because they do have the potential, they just don't seem to be able to work together well enough...
Read moreBest breakfast biscuit I have ever had. Handmade and you can tell. Delicious bacon. Great service. Yummy Bloody Mary. 12:15 on. Thursday and patio seating was pretty much open.
Update 6 months later I showed some friends this biscuit and I have wanted this darn thing ever since. Well, walked 20 mins over there and signed up for their waiting list on Yelp (after a phone call). Mmm SO glad we made that walk over there. I seriously can’t want til I get back for another one! Ordered a side of grits this time as well, creamy and delicious. Y’all keep it up!
Update it’s December 2023. I have been thinking about this dang breakfast biscuit for MONTHS, I cannot wait to go have it again. I’ll update a photo at the end of the month or January 2024 when they’re still killing it 3 years later!
Update 2024 As promised, new pics. They had a longer wait than usual but we had the biggest group we’ve ever gone with at 7 and an infant. About an hour wait, was able to watch the wait times on the Yelp app and walk around the French market til they were ready. Not sure how much it’s in the businesses control but the homeless people ~10’ from the front door was new, they’re usually across the street and when we walked past were being asked for our leftovers and drinks etc. Now we usually give leftovers to homeless folks anyways so just being asked before we even ate was a bit frustrating. Maybe out of your control though and nothing on y’all! I got my breakfast biscuit and Bloody Mary and I’ll just say, til next time you...
