Monty’s on the Square: Where Sunday Brunch Is a Sacred Ritual (and Amaury Is the High Priest of Hospitality)
If you’re wandering the French Quarter on a Sunday morning, wondering whether divine intervention might come in the form of crispy chicken and creamy grits, Monty’s on the Square is your answer. This isn’t just brunch. It’s a sermon served with gravy, and we were front-row congregants.
We came in hungry, hopeful, and slightly rain-soaked, ready to worship at the altar of Southern comfort food. The Country Style Breakfast arrived like a gospel choir in full harmony: chicken fried to a golden hallelujah, gravy smoother than a saxophone solo at Preservation Hall, and grits so creamy they could moonlight as a love song. That touch of crème cheese? Not so secret, but absolutely sacred.
My wife’s Jambalaya Omelette was a revelation. Fluffy, flavorful, and filled with just enough Cajun swagger to make you rethink your life choices. The kind of omelette that doesn’t just sit on your plate, it struts.
But let’s talk about Amaury. Our server, our guide, our brunch whisperer. Amaury didn’t just take care of us, he elevated the entire experience. Attentive without hovering, warm without pretense, and somehow always appearing right when you needed him, like a brunch guardian angel with a coffee pot. If Monty’s ever builds a Hall of Fame, Amaury deserves his own stained-glass window.
Now, if I may offer one humble suggestion to the powers that be: lose the TV sets. I say this with love. The food sings, the service shines, and the vibe is almost perfect, but those screens feel like a commercial break in an otherwise cinematic experience. Let the jazz, the clinking of forks, and the hum of happy diners be the soundtrack. No one comes to Monty’s to watch cable news, we come to taste joy.
Monty’s on the Square isn’t just a restaurant. It’s a reminder that Sunday brunch can be holy, that grits can be transcendent, and that sometimes, the best way to start your day is with a plate full of soul and a server named Amaury who treats you like royalty.
Would I return? Like a pilgrim to Mecca. Would I recommend it? Only to people I love, and maybe a few I’m...

Served with our house-made spicy ranch sauce); scrambled eggs; cheese grits. Food (not included in the pictures): Sweet Cream Pancakes (Sweetened, heavy cream infused pancakes dusted with powdered sugar and topped with whipped cream); Red Beans & Rice (Slow-cooked, creamy red beans made with cajun spices. Served with smoked sausage and Leidenheimer French bread).
Ambiance: Casual & upbeat Parking: N/A. I ubered because it is a very busy and crowded area. Pricing: The pricing was fair; it was between cheap and pricey. Food (flavors): The shrimps in the poboy were fried to perfection and taste good though I didn't taste any unique flavors. The shrimps were savory. I wished the poppy had a sauce on it (like popeys used to have on their poboy) because it was dry and I felt like it needed something else. It still tasted good though. The fries were super crunchy and tasty; they didn't have any unique flavors. The eggs were bland but cooked well (flufffy). The cheesy grits were good after I added some salt and pepper to them. The roasted red pepper cheese bites were fried to perfection and had an amazing flavor combination; the sauce really tied that dish together. The sweet cream pancakes were fluffy and perfectly infused with a sweet flavor; I highly recommend it. And the red beans & rice were also very tasty and consisted of savory and smokey flavors; the sausage really added a great burst of flavor to that dish. Portion size: Medium to large Drinks: N/A Note: I normally don't talk about the service, but I was NOT happy with the service here. My waiter took forever to do everything.
