Scott McCloud said that art is "a way we assert our identities as individuals and break out of the narrow roles nature casts us in."
St. Pizza could easily be seen as a pizzeria serving slices, pies, and other food items. However, every time I visit, I would argue they are artists who at the time of writing have been crafting this work for a year.
From the dough to the toppings there is a level of care that exceeds what is necessary to execute an excellent pie.
The slices are placed in the oven to be crisped and warmed so they can be finished with any additional finishing touches before served in between paper plates.
The pies are individually executed in a way that demonstrates care with toppings either made, selected, or placed with intent before baking and finishing touches such as oils or basil after they come out of the oven.
In either case, I cannot help but recall Domenico DeMarco lovingly adding olive oil and basil to his pies at Di Fara pizza every time I see a St. Pizza slice or pie get its finishing touches. I see the beginnings of what I imagine DeMarco did in 1965 but with modern notions of pizza making.
From ripping basil and placing it on top or seeing drizzles of oil placed on slices, there is a beauty to knowing each slice or pie is crafted with the mark of the person who made it. Those moments create the experience I have come to cherish from every bite.
My particular favorites are the sausage pizza and the green pie.
The sausage is flavorful but balanced perfectly with the mozzarella, Parmesan, and pecorino. The fennel dust bridges them into a perfect flavor composition every time. The sausage itself is sufficiently firm to add the right texture, but soft enough to become part of the bite as opposed to overpowering the texture of every bite.
The green pie is among the top three incarnations of the veggie pie I have ever eaten. The greens are consistently cooked such that there remains just enough bitterness that when the garlic confit and sweet ricotta combine they compliment each other in a symphony of flavor. The chili oil adds just enough heat to liven up the end of every bite with a nice finish. Squeezing some lemon on top provides the acidity that ultimately makes all of the ingredients sing.
The French fries are shockingly crisp and flavorful. They have become a treat I look forward to and I am usually not one to be tempted by pizza and fries.
Every visit feels welcoming and between the service and the quality of the food ensure that every visit to St. Pizza brings joy to my evening. I cannot recommend this...
Read moreI had been hearing and reading so much about this place over the last month I had to try them the 1st chance I got. Taking a break from my pub crawl I walked around the corner from the courtyard brewery to find a line both inside and at the window. It was about a 15min wait just to order a slice. As it was lunch during 4th July weekend, being the newish hype in town, they were understandably busy. Once I ordered the inside cleared out and I was able to wait in their AC. They don't have any seating, just a stand up counter which I made use of. It seems most people eat at the bar next door if they don't take it home. I got a standard pepperoni slice which was anything but. What they've been saying is mostly true. High quality toppings, sauce and cheese working in harmony. The crust is fired to perfection, crispy and stiff enough to hold, not fold. And still tender and flavorful to add to the party. Is it the best pizza in New Orleans, hard for me to say, but miles above any daq shop slice I've had down in the qtr. The best pizza slice I've had came from New Jersey, this is very close. I just wish the slices were bigger, they're not small but not NY size. And I think they can be a little more efficient service wise. Even being busy, the ex pizza slinger in me saw that they could've been quicker. They had plenty of par-baked slices to finish in the oven upon order. Why it took 15min after ordering to get one slice they heated for 30secs seems long. It was worth it but it could be a problem when they're truly slammed, so be prepared to wait. Hopefully they'll get...
Read moreSt. Pizza is an absolute gem. The customer service here is unmatched—the staff knows me by name, remembers my order, and always goes out of their way to make sure everything is perfect. It feels like dining with family.
One of the most unique things about St. Pizza is the water. It’s filtered, incredibly clean-tasting, and hands down the best water I’ve ever had. It’s also used in their dough, and I’m convinced that’s part of what makes their pizza so exceptional.
Speaking of pizza—this is easily one of my favorite spots anywhere. The tomato pie is a masterpiece. The undercarriage is always spot-on, with the perfect crisp and structure, and the tomato sauce? It’s the best pizza sauce I’ve ever had, no question.
Beyond pizza, the spaghetti and meatballs is my all-time favorite. Rich, comforting, and bursting with flavor. My son and I eat here often—it’s one of our go-to places, and we always leave happy.
Whether you’re ordering at the outdoor window to take your meal to-go or sitting down inside, you’re in for a treat. The ambiance indoors is cozy and inviting, with warm lighting and just the right vibe to relax and enjoy a great meal.
St. Pizza is a rare combination of quality, heart, and hospitality....
