If Bourbon Street is the boozy heartbeat of New Orleans, then Zesty Creole is its buttery, biscuit-slinging soul wrapped in a fast-casual facade and sprinkled with just enough touristy charm to make you feel like you’re starring in your own Food Network special.
We stumbled in, lured by the promise of seafood and starch, and let me tell you: Zesty doesn’t just describe the seasoning, it’s a lifestyle. The place hums with the energy of a breakfast joint that moonlights as a late-night Creole fever dream. Open until 3AM, because apparently, crawfish cravings don’t respect bedtime.
The Vibe: Imagine a diner that got kissed by a jazz band and blessed by a gumbo priest. It’s clean, fast, and friendly, like if Waffle House went to finishing school in the French Quarter. Staff? Saints in aprons. Service? Faster than a gator on hot pavement. Décor? Canal Street chic with a splash of Mardi Gras mischief.
The Food: Let’s begin with the CREOLE ÉTOUFFÉE. A buttery roux so rich it probably owns property in the Garden District. Shrimp and crawfish tail swam in a holy trinity of onion, celery, and bell pepper, seasoned like someone’s grandma was whispering secrets to the chef. The biscuit? A fluffy, golden sponge sent from the carbohydrate heavens to soak up every last drop of Creole glory.
Then came the ZESTY SEAFOOD OMELETTE. Three eggs, sautéed shrimp, crawfish, tomato, bell pepper, and cheddar cheese—basically a seafood boil tucked into a breakfast blanket. The cheese grits were creamy enough to make you question your loyalty to oatmeal, and the buttermilk biscuit was so good it made me briefly consider proposing to the pastry chef.
Bonus Round: Beignets. Powdered sugar snowstorm meets fried dough nirvana. Tourist trap? Maybe. Worth it? Absolutely. These little pillows of joy are the edible equivalent of a brass band playing “When the Saints Go Marching In” in your mouth.
The Price: Mid-range, but generous portions. You’re not just paying for food, you’re paying for a fast-pass to the heart of Creole cuisine without the white tablecloth guilt.
The Crowd: A mix of wide-eyed tourists, hungover locals, and conference-goers who just discovered what seasoning tastes like. Everyone’s welcome, and everyone leaves full.
Final Verdict: Zesty Creole is the kind of place that reminds you why New Orleans is a culinary playground. It’s fast food with soul, touristy with taste, and unapologetically delicious. If you’re looking for a bite that bites back, with flavor, flair, and a biscuit that could start a religion, this...
Read moreStopped here several times while on a trip for a friend’s birthday. First two times were for breakfast/lunch, third time for dinner.
Breakfast menu is relatively cheap for the quality. Got the French toast, then the biscuits & gravy - biscuits here are absolutely delicious. Made by hand, nice soft crunch on the outside but warm & buttery inside with not a hint of dryness. Initially thought it was odd the french toast did not come with syrup - just add some butter, it’s light & sweet and doesn’t really need anything more than that. (However, I did get the French toast to-go - I am sure they have it available if you really want some syrup.)
For dinner I went with the gumbo. Dish was dressed and seasoned well, however I will say that if you are looking for something a little more filling the jambalaya might do you better. Maybe not the most exciting gumbo in the city but it is certain to put a smile on your face & good to the last drop.
Beignets are also excellent here. My frame of reference for beignets in New Orleans is admittedly smaller but we did enjoy thoroughly.
Service here is delightful. Turn around on order time is pretty quick even when things are busy. Perfect if you are trying to grab a bite before going out to the bars.
The staff were warm & welcoming each time I came to visit, if you walk by you will likely see Liz trying to get folks to come in. She’s a treasure! Made sure we were taken care of and then some. Feels like the type of place you could go back to after a year and they’d still remember your face. Interior is clean and decor is inviting. Sort of unassuming from the outside but well worth stopping in.
Summary: Good bar. Great food. Excellent staff & service. Cozy & welcoming environment and a must for visitors staying in the area, especially if you haven’t had a proper taste of creole food yet. Zesty Creole hits all marks without being pretentious or overpriced. CANNOT miss the biscuits! Thanks again to Liz for making our trip that much more memorable.
P.S. - I did finish my gumbo to the...
