Came here randomly after work, while checking out the tennis store nearby. I smelled the cooking from this store across the street, literally. That and the advertising on the front ("everyday indian food") is what lured me in. I got the "plate" option, which is the classic indian style. I got the yellow rice and yellow dal(beans. It is also easier to digest than the black dal. Note that black beans from chipotle and mexican restaurants are usually not easy to digest because of how they are cooked. Indian style beans are usually easier to digest because they are well cooked and seasoned with garlic and ginger and other spices, acting as digestifs). The guy at the front was cool, he gave me options of how to mix and match. I already knew what i wanted though so i stayed with my staples. Yellow rice, white rice, yellow dal, a piece of chicken, some paneer masala (curdled cheese, not tofu), basic onions tomato cilantro (pico de gallo style), mint coriander yogurt drizzle, lightly pickled cucumbers, lightly fried pieces of small potatos, and raita (yogurt with herbs, usually its liquidy, but they have it like greek tzatziki sauce). I took it to go, and got the mando lassi (yogurt and mango with just enough water to liquify it enough, no sugar or anything else. Really healthy) and "chaas" (the remains of a good batch of homemade yogurt, watery and served cold or sometimes mixed with a pinch of salt to act as a final digestif at the end of the meal)
Overall, this is basically how homemade, healthy, indian food tastes and is cooked for an "everyday meal" as is advertised. The super oily/greasy and overspiced (both in herbs and heat), is the cliche indian food stuff left for "curry row" near baruch. This...

Read moreAfter living in the US for so long, the simple comfort of a home-cooked meal becomes something you value more each day. Ambo brought that nostalgic taste of home back to me in the most delightful way. The concept is easy—choose a base, then add beans, protein, veggies, toppings, and sauces to create your perfect bowl.
What truly amazed me was how every item complemented the others, coming together in a symphony of flavors. The bhindi deserves a special shoutout—I'm obsessed with okra, and this one brought me right back to my mom's kitchen.
And then there’s the biryani sauce—mind blowing. It tastes just like biryani and takes the bowl to a whole new level. Plus, the portion sizes are fantastic and so filling.
Beyond the food, the team at Ambo is warm and welcoming, and the space is cozy. Out of all the Indian restaurants I have been to in NY, next time someone says they want to taste food that tastes like home I am bringing them...
