Our reviews had over 56 million views in the last 12 months. We do not get paid we just love to eat and have fun. We really love Cosme. Great food from Mexico but do not expect to order a "taco plate #3" here. This is the best Mexican food we have ever had. The menu has 3 categories of food. We skipped the first one based on the fact we are not big tostada eaters. Others have told us they are very good, but we cannot say for sure. In the 2nd category we had Potato Tetela with cheddar and caviar. It was fantastic. Nothing like what we expected. She almost ordered another one but our server said we had already ordered too much food. In the photo it is the dish formed in a purple triangle. The sauce was also to die for. I had the Cobia al Pastor. I would call it "fish with pineapple and pineapple butter" It was one of the best dishes I have ever had. Comes with blue corn tortillas. The fish was sweet and lightly cooked with a super wonderful covering on the skin. I tried it plain and I made 4 tacos with the pineapple butter, cilantro and jalapeno peppers. Words cannot explain how good it was. Again I would have ordered another one but the server said we had ordered too much already. Main course I got the duck which is supposed to be for 2 and she got the brisket. Both dishes served with blue corn tortillas. My duck must have been the biggest duck of all time!!!! I could not believe how much meat was in the hot skillet they served it in. OMG was it good. I ate the skin with my fork and made 10 (yes 10) tacos with the meat. That only took half of the meat. The duck as moist (so was the skin) and full of flavor. Best duck ever including chinese joints. I give this a 10 out of 10 but the brisket I give an 11 out of 10. Brisket was slow smoked with a sweet taste as well. She made 5 tacos for herself and 4 more for me (yes 4 more for me!!!) and I could not believe how good they were. Some avocado sauce on it that was excellent and both dishes were served with 2 sauces that were not spicy but were both super. We had 3 desserts. All were great. Best was the chocolate flan but i suspect most folks would prefer the famous Cornhusk Meringue. My only complaint about the Cornhusk Meringue is that i do not like how hard sugar meringue feels in my mouth. I realize that most people love it and that is why I would recommend it. The inside is crazy good as well. The banana matcha with pecans is also fantastic. I would rate all the desserts we had as 10 out of 10. They do give you some huge chips to start. Try the 2 sauces and order more for later if you love them like we did . The orange one is hot but full of flavor. We will go back here for sure. Insider's note, this place has bad signage so make sure you know where it is before you go. I got a photo below to help you out as well. Loud in here but very fun. Romantic as well but great for groups too. Check out all of our reviews and look at all the photos below. Read moreWas excited about this place because of all the great reviews. Overall a mixed bag. As always, my reviews will focus almost exclusively on the food.
Started off with the El Ninja cocktail, thought it was delicious.
Herb guacamole w/ corn tostadas -Very good guac, and the tostadas were solid. However...it's just guac lol, it's not hard to make a perfectly tasty guac at home.
Fluke tostada w/ chile mixe -The chile mixe on the side was quite tasty and had an interesting, deep flavor. The fluke tostada was fine, not anything special
Prawns al pastor -Prawns were well cooked and the heads intact with delicious flavor (the fatty prawn head juice is the best part of prawns). Came with an interesting pineapple butter, never had a fruit flavored butter like this before. It sort of went well with the spiced prawns, though I think there definitely could have been a better sauce to accompany the prawns
Octopus w/ chile morita -Surprisingly spicy, not sure if the spice level was intentional. Not blow your head off spicy, but spicy enough that I had to wait a bit before trying the next dish, because at about $40 per plate I want to be able to taste the nuances of everything. Still enjoyable for me and the octopus was well cooked, but anyone with low spice tolerance would have been in some pain.
Mole de la case with parsnip and spinach -I've only had a few mole sauces in my life, and this was probably the best one I've had, nice depth of flavor. The parsnip and spinach actually went well with the sauce. I can see how this sauce could be polarizing though; my friend wasn't a fan.
Pork belly castacan -Delicious with crispy skin. The sauce was nice, but also felt like could have been improved upon in some way.
Cornhusk meringue -This was the most disappointing dish of the night for me. Seeing so many reviews rave about this dish, I was expecting an incredible dessert. This dish is basically 3 parts: a white sweet peripheral cream, a corn-flavored yellowish cream in the center, and two crunchy meringue pieces. The white cream was fine, a nice light sweetness, nothing special. The corn-flavored cream was definitely unique, but not in a good way; it just wasn't a particularly pleasant taste. Not terrible, but definitely not delicious. The meringue pieces were ok, but I thought overly sweet. Overall this dessert was just ok, and certainly not deserving of all the apparent fame it's gotten. My friend wasn't a fan of this dessert either. Judging from the reviews, I guess my opinion of this dish is unpopular, but I firmly stand by it. I've had countless desserts better than this. Furthermore, given that some of my favorite desserts are tiramisu, creme brulee, and portuguese egg tarts, all creamy textured desserts, this dessert at face value should have been something I would like. But I would rather have even an average tiramisu than this dessert, and the other day I had a $2 portuguese egg tart that was far better than this dessert.
To summarize, the food overall was indeed quite good; however most of the dishes are $30-40 and relatively small, so not a good value at all. For just 2 people with healthy appetites, to be full you will need to spend at least $300-400 easy. I don't regret coming here once, but once is...
Read moreDefinitely excellent food and absolutely incredible service! Also by far the most expensive restaurant on our recent NYC trip.
The waitress explained the menu to us clearly and quickly, and we made our selection very fast. My husband has Celiac Disease and cannot have any gluten even through cross contamination, and only one or two menu items contained gluten. If you need to eat gluten-free, this is a good, if pricey, option for you!
The food tastes beyond delicious, and is elevated beyond just a meal, to an experience. The cocktails we got were pretty good, and my husband even ordered a second. For our meal, we had the guacamole with tostadas, which was excellent and so fresh; the Lobster al pastor with pineapple, which was the smaller portion size you expect with lobster, but so tasty paired with the pineapple; and the duck carnitas, which was so tender and flavorful that it reminded us more of pork, and was the definite highlight. We did save room for dessert, and got the husky meringue corn mousse to share. It was so unusual and so, so good! A nice cross between savory and sweet. We highly recommend it! Because they knew we were celebrating our anniversary, they also brought us a tres leches cake, which was gluten-free, soft, and super moist.
The service here is crazy attentive! They gave us a carafe to fill our waters with if we ran low, but as soon as we took a swallow or two, a server would materialize out of nowhere and refill our waters for us. I don't think I've ever felt so waited on hand and foot, anywhere I've ever gone. The real kicker is that you feel you have privacy and it doesn't seem like you're being watched, until the waiters appear from out of nowhere and then fade back into the background once their work is done. They know what they're doing here, service-wise!
The price here is the only real drawback. We knew ahead of time it would be expensive, but even so, the almost $400 price tag (including a good tip) for the two of us was quite steep! You could skip drinks and dessert and come out a bit cheaper, but still, Cosme is definitely a special occasions restaurant. I'm not sure the food and experience was worth a full $400, which is the only reason for my star deduction in my rating. There were much cheaper restaurants we visited that we enjoyed more, but this was still excellent, especially for the "dress-up, fancy dinner" night of our trip. I recommend it, if you're okay with breaking the bank for a really nice,...
