i don't write google reviews but i don't have enough ✰ stars ✰ to sum up how much i love this place—anytime anyone visits this is the first place i bring them. more comments below, but the digestion smoothie has changed my life and the pastries here (salted choco chip + banana bread esp) never miss.
this is a very specific space, but if you frequent here, you understand why that's *so important to honor.
if i'm eating a lunch plate here, it's bc i want a delicious plate that feels like each part was made just then, by someone, which it was, and i think the fast-paced manhattan mindset rly removes people from how rewarding / rare it is to receive crafted, healthy, intimate home-cooked food.
i rarely use my laptop in here because it's such a sacred space to me but when i had jean told me early on about the laptop rule and i love it, because when i (more often) come here for peace and solitude i don't want to be in an internet cafe. when i adopted a new doggo and needed to be here for extra time to get some time away and work done, i told jean i'd like to buy both breakfast and lunch and she was supportive, communicative, and respectful of that. the music here also always slaps so listen to that!
i also learned to be more cognizant of my carbon footprint (am i taking this to go or sitting in?) and admittedly it's something i want to be better at but don't always know how. i like how this place keeps me on my toes with that stuff.
also i saw a review about the posters they have up, which i think is ridiculous. this is a local place, family-owned, and keeping it real and i don't think it makes sense at all for them to corporate sensor themselves to be palatable to others. the open expression of that is a beautiful thing.
if a place is this special, as doctors cave is, the kind of place that's truly like a hidden treasure, then it only makes sense to respect it and be thrilled to do so. the specificity of this place is what makes it...
Read moreThis is a super cute cafe/restaurant on Marcy Ave. The owner who runs the spot is so nice; she’s always willing to talk to you about the menu and make recommendations. The same is true for all the workers; they really seem invested in the restaurant and everyone’s experience. My go-to order here is the jerk chicken sandwich. The chicken is perfectly sliced and juicy. The bread is perfect; not too thick and perfectly soft (it won’t shred the roof of your mouth or take super human strength to break apart lol!). They grill the chicken at the restaurant, which is nice. In the past, I’ve had the side of cabbage which is good. All of the ingredients are locally sourced, so sometimes they run out of items, so I suggest getting lunch on the earlier side (circa 12) otherwise they may run out of what you want.
The ONLY criticism I have is that everything is on the pricier side. The chicken sandwich is FIFTEEN dollars!! And it doesn’t come with any sides. I would love to come here more often, but can’t due to the price. I do feel good patronizing this spot but the prices are...
Read moreThis was my third time at the restaurant, and I found the prices to be quite reasonable considering the average prices in New York. Everything is fresh, and the bakery items are delicious. I believe the staff to be very friendly, especially since I observed their friendliness with other customers. Although my interactions with them were okay, I can see they are generally friendly. I ordered a mango, orange, and apple smoothie (make your own), but it wasn't the tastiest, perhaps because I made the wrong choices in mixing. Maybe I should have opted for their pre-set options instead. However, the food, particularly the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, was incredibly tasty. Despite a minor hiccup when I arrived outside of breakfast hours, the BLT I had instead was also delicious. Returning during breakfast, I finally got to enjoy the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich again, and it was just as good as I remembered. So, yeah, overall, it was a...
