Had a poor experience. The maitre d’ berated my friend and I for holding two iced coffees from a nearby coffee shop, but then tried to pass it off as a joke when we apologized and my friend threw her half-finished iced coffee away. To make things worse, there was no coffee on the menu, so we couldn’t have ordered coffees if we even wanted. Additionally, my friend and I were planning on ordering brunch cocktails for ~$13 each, but after the maitre d’s “joke,” we were no longer in the cocktail mood. Point to Good Enough to Eat for convincing us not to double the cost of our meal with overpriced alcohol!!! We should have left after this initial interaction, as it was only a portend of things to come.
After being seated, my friend and I both ordered mediocre omelette provencals with their “famous strawberry butter” and whole wheat biscuits. The strawberry butter was underwhelming and the biscuits were pretty dry and poor tasting. Our waters were never refilled during the entire meal.
Things continued to worsen. After waiting for 20 minutes to our plates to be cleared, we reminded our waitress of the two fruit crumbles we ordered. She headed outside to serve up said crumbles from their display case of desserts in the 90 degree heat. When the crumbles arrived, the fruit tasted undercooked and extremely boozy and the crumble topping was nearly burnt on one side and RAW on the other side. Clearly, the crumble had been blasted at a high heat that made the topping appear burnt while the fruit and fruit-facing topping was severely undercooked. After two bites, we asked our waitress if we could have the check and have the crumbles taken off the bill. The manager was sent over and tried to convince us that the clearly raw crumble dough was “moist” and “only like that because it’s hot outside.” It’s concerning that the desserts are kept unrefrigerated in the heat all day, especially when some of them contain raw ingredients (intentionally or otherwise). Seems like a health violation to me. After explaining to the manager that we knew the difference between raw and moist, he finally agreed to take these $9 raw desserts off the bill. We then waited another 20 minutes to finally catch our waitress’s attention and pay for the mediocre meal.
Honestly, our waitress seemed like she was managing way too many tables, so it’s hard to blame her completely for slow service. However, the service was terrible from the maitre d’ to the lack of attention from the waitress to the manager trying to convince my friend and I, both experienced bakers, that a raw dough was moist.
I don’t normally write reviews or complain about bad food, but this was such a terrible experience. Good Enough To Eat is a disappointing restaurant with a boring menu that survives on clout alone. Much better to go around the corner to Jacob’s Pickles or Maison Pickle and get excellent service and delicious food. Good Enough To Eat may have been around for 40 years, but it can’t go out of business...
Read moretl;dr Called to order Item A, but was given Item C. When I noticed the mistake once home, I called back requesting Item A. Waiter insists that I said Item B, but since Item B doesn't exist he gave me Item C. The combativeness and gaslighting was weird, therefore 1-Star and not 'Good Enough To Eat' here again.
Called to place an order for pick up. Waiter put me on hold to help someone else for a few seconds, then took my order. I ordered a Lumberjack and a Classic Grilled Cheese. Picked up the order 20 min later, right on time.
Unfortunately, the order was wrong. I was given a Reuben rather than a Classic Grilled Cheese. When I called to rectify the situation, the waiter insisted that I "ordered a Roast Beef Sandwich, and since there is no Roast Beef Sandwich, [Good Enough to Eat] gave us a Reuben because that's the closest thing." I confirmed that I didn't order a Roast Beef Sandwich and requested a Classic Grilled Cheese. Mistakes happen; whatever. Not a big deal.
I asked if I could pick up a Classic Grilled Cheese now. They were resistant at first but then said that we could get a Grilled Cheese. They asked if I wanted him to add it to the bill, and I told him that I wanted it comped since they gave me the wrong order (this is literally like... $1.25 worth of ingredients?)
The waiter insisted that I had ordered a Roast Beef Sandwich and was given a Reuben because they don't have a Roast Beef Sandwich. A few rounds of "No, I never said anything about Roast Beef" and "Yes you did" ensued.
The waiter insisted the manager would not approve a comped Classic Grilled Cheese because this was all my fault. It was weird that the waiter double and triple downed that it was me who ordered the wrong thing, when the reality is that... No. One. Ordered. A. Roast. Beef. Sandwich.
There was no apology, or empathy, or desire to find a solution. Just pure gaslighting.
And even if I had ordered a Roast Beef, why would they take that order and knowingly plan to give me a Reuben, but not warn me beforehand?!? "Hey, we don't have a Roast Beef Sandwich. We do have a Reuben though; do you want that?" To which I would have responded with "No, I said Classic Grilled Cheese. I want a Classic Grilled Cheese."
It's just. Weird. 1-Star. Do not recommend. Will go to Cafe 82 next time I'm in the mood for diner...
Read moreThe place does not take brunch reservations. We arrived and there were standing around outside but it wasn't clear if they were in line or just milling about. We went in to get a table for two and found out that was a line, we watched many people make the same mistake we did and have to come back out and line up, so maybe some signage would be helpful there. We didn't have to wait long which was great because while it was sunny it was a bit chilly. We got a very cute two person table. The place was packed but I didn't feel like it was two nosy or anyone was too close. I order the gramercy park omelette and bacon, my girl friend who is gluten free got the provencal omelette and substituted the biscuits for potatoes. The biscuits are so good especially with there strawberry butter. It was the first time I had strawberry butter and I will definitely be having more in the future. The bacon are the thickest slices I've ever had and were a real treat. My omelette was better in theory than in practice. I love granny smith apples and cheddar cheese, but for some reason in the omelette they were more separate then blended. I would get a bite of egg and apple or egg and cheese but they almost never were mixed so the balance of the sweet apple with salted cheese just didn't happen. The apple slices were also pretty firm so it didn't feel like apart of the omelette sometimes. My friends omelette on the other hand was AMAZING. The goat cheese was everything her and I had split the two omelettes and I was so grateful we had because it was bliss. The service was really good even with it being so busy. I really enjoyed the...
