Now I believe as a gluten free person that it is our duty to help other gluten free people to discover the good gluten free foods out there and to avoid the bad gluten free foods. Especially for those new to being gluten free! I imagine this is probably also true for vegans! I am not vegan but I have to warn both gluten free and vegan folks away from this place.
Stay far away from Martha's Country Bakery. I came here on a whim while passing by late and night and surprised to find a bakery still open. They are open til midnight, which is cool. I went in and asked what their gluten free options were. The lady at the counter told me that they have macarons, rice pudding, flan, strawberry cheesecake, carrot cake and a chocolate fudge cake. I decided to go with the chocolate cake and the carrot cake, which are also both vegan.
Y'all, they are so bad. In particular, the frosting on both of them was terrible and made them inedible. I took a couple bites of each one and then had to give up. The flavor is almost like they put in one of those fake sugars instead of real sugar. Because it was so bad I ended up calling them to get the ingredients for the frostings. They told me that the frosting is mainly just vegetable shortening and real sugar. And for the carrot cake, they added in a vegan cream cheese. I talked to a vegan friend of mine and she said that using vegetable shortening in an icing or frosting is "cheap and gross" and that it would be better if they used a high quality vegan butter.
It seems like they didn't test these recipes out with actual vegans at all. Its hard imagining anyone with good taste enjoying these.
I do wonder if the vegetable shortening they used was off or old or something, and that's what gave it the bad taste. Either way, I will not be getting these cakes again. And I'll probably avoid this bakery completely, but out of pure curiosity I do want to try the Strawberry Cheesecake (which is not vegan,) to see if its better than these.
The other gluten free items they have on the menu (macarons, rice pudding, flan) are not worth coming here for as these items are naturally gluten free and you can find them alot of places.
Also a side note, the couple bites I took did not make my stomach feel great. It wasn't terrible but I definitely felt a little discomfort. Another friend I talked to about this place said that something they put in their recipes makes them "legit ill". I wonder if its the same thing that started to make me feel off.
I'm really disappointed that I paid $20 for two slices of cake that I had to throw out.
So in conclusion, MCB, please re-formulate your Vegan items and please test them on seasoned vegans who know good food. Don't offer people slop. And maybe come out with...
Read moreSo it’s my birthday weekend and I was so excited to go to Martha’s because everyone keeps ranting by and raving about it. I have had some of their goodies but never been there in person. My friends took me as a surprise. Walked up to esthetically pleasing place ready to take pics and enjoy the ambiance. It has a plethora of amazing treats and sweets it’s all about pleasure here. The room at the time was empty. My little group of theee asked if we can be seated in a booth like seating or towards the back. We got a strong “no” and the two young lady’s facial expressions changed. Now it’s a gentrified Brooklyn here so it’s a mixture of races etc in the area but my friends and family are all looking at each other. The two hosts (I guess) are now talking in Spanish. My family speaks Spanish so I asked in “Spanish 🙏🏾 “. They said it’s reserved for larger groups. We respectfully accepted it and say we’re placed in the front. Couldn’t help but notice all the black people were seated upfront and even a bigger group than ours so we said to ourselves shouldn’t they be seated further they’re all squished together in the corner. We couldn’t help but take notice that white couples sat where we requested.. hmmpph interesting huh. Not a surprise for this neighborhood. Most play it off but this was interesting. Anyway. My server Grace did a great job at being hospitable so I stayed. The pastries and desserts were amazing. You gotta try their Red Velvet Hot Chocolate. So much to love about Martha’s. They even have a DJ for late night “turn ups”. The music was good, the decor and everything will make your taste buds dance along with the playlist. Wish things were a little different but Grace made up for stuff. She even got me a cupcake for my birthday that I thoroughly enjoyed. Despite everything I would recommend this spot. Breakfast, brunch or even late night.
FYI - Vegan options also available and it’s...
