The atmosphere and ambiance is immaculate. Itās above and beyond expectation for a country bakery. But inside are big-city personalities. When you walk in the door itās a kind gesture to acknowledge the customer, thank you, but you have to give people the opportunity to look around.
It was very distasteful to be asked more than 4 times in the less than a minuteāāare you being helpedācan I help youā. So with that I donāt have the opportunity to shop the case and see what products were offered (and itās very rude).
Lastly, the whole tipping situationāyes I did tip but it felt forced. So in America people expect you to walk into a bakery and they get product for you and they want a 15-20% for the entire order? Thatās tastelessāMarthaās Country Bakery should pay you enough money to support yourself without having to push those expenses onto customers. Lastly, if the company is providing a living wage then shame on the counter attendants for being greedy. Your not technically (or legally classified) as a tipped worker like a server or bartender to demand gratituity.
None the less the pastries are professionally presented and I particularly loved the cinnamon roll in the case, it looked like it was baked to perfection, but before I could view other options I was rushed (and the store was not packed).
So I ordered the napoleon (berry option). First, the name is wrong. Itās a cream based so itās a Mille-feuille (a napoleon has almond paste).
The. Mille-feuille tasted store bought. It was very flaky (almost as if the layers were rolled with lard), it lacked any butter flavor, it was tough, waxy, and very difficult to eat with the plastic fork provided. In addition, some parts were undercooked. (Some commercial brands do this just in case the baker on site decides to take it a bit further once received in the box).
The strawberries were over-ripe but the blueberries held their shape. The pastry cream tasted genericāmade me wonder if it was packaged or made on site because Iāve tasted a very similar brand from SYSCO.
The overall eating experience was difficult as stated it was like trying to take a plastic fork through layers of wax which caused the contents to explode out the sides. The taste was the reason for the one of the stars outside of the top layer of the Mille-feuille and the strawberries, the cream, blueberries, and bottom layer made quite a nice fork bite. The second attempt caused the fork to twist and I was able to do one hand bench presses picking the whole thing up.
The second star was the coffee (which is 3 stars on its own) because it immediately cleared away the aftertaste of the napoleon/ Mille-feuille or whatever that was. I would suggest that if itās truly not something authentically made please stop selling it because itās not good.
That cinnamon roll looks...

Ā Ā Ā Read moreWas visiting family in the area and on the way out they told me about this new bakery that everyone is talking about. So stopped by to pick up some Greek desserts to go. The bakery looks very nice, the desserts in the display looked great. I was disappointed that there wasn't a lot of Greek desserts, but just because it's in Astoria doesn't mean it should be 100% greek desserts, so that's on me. Walked in with my kids and there's a section for take out orders. There was one of those rope extenders to form a line so everyone could be helped in order. The problem was there was a register on both ends, I didn't see a sign indicating where the line starts. After waiting for a minute or two to figure it out I noticed there was really no Rhyme or Reason to that line so I just jumped in. Picked up 2 cupcakes for the kids, nothing special about the cupcakes, my 3 year old took two bites and looked at me and said "I'm good", shes never done that when it comes to us giving her sweets. They were small, they were ok but I've made better, bigger and I'm no baker. Picked up a piece of baklava, good size I guess for the price, and again it was good but I had better in Astoria. The last thing I picked up was some apple bread pudding, never had an APPLE bread pudding before. I was looking forward to getting home, brewing some coffee and and jumping head first into that pudding!! Yeah... super disappointed, no taste, nothing special, didn't even finish it. Everything else was good, I just expected more from a Gourmet bakery that everyone is supposedly raving about. Looking back at it now kinda of price, 2 very small cupcakes, 1baklava and 1 apple bread pudding = $20 ... Idk? Maybe I'm out of touch and it's not expensive? This is just my opinion. All that said, this place looks very nice, the desserts do look amazing. I will go back, there was an oreo cheesecake I was eyeing. Overall this place was... Ok. I just don't get all the hype yet? Maybe I will once I have the...
