My friend and I made a reservation at Mikado for 7:30pm on a Thursday. The dinner rush had cleared by that point, so a reservation wasn't necessary. The interior has a nice aesthetic, so it would be a great location for a business dinner or fancy night out.
We ordered a salmon teriyaki bento set ($30), a hand roll set ($29), gyu don ($24), and yuzu cheese cake ($4). I got the bento set, and I would not recommend getting this, unless you really are not a sushi fan (in that case, you really should go somewhere else). The tuna ball ($12 if ordered separately as an app) was very tasty and packed with flavor. The spicy mayo definitely had a kick, but it worked. I picked a basic tuna avocado for my hand roll, and the fish tasted fresh with nice natural flavor. The salmon teriyaki was the thinnest thing I have ever experienced, which meant that overcooking it was much easier. I got it because I knew the hand rolls would not be filling enough, but if you're here to splurge, splurge on the sushi. My friend enjoyed the hand roll set, but ordered the gyu don after still feeling hungry. The only critique I have about the hand roll set is their taco-style rolls are messy to eat. I got the cheesecake to have something to eat while my friend ate the gyu don, but it was nothing special.
Service was polite, but my water went empty twice, and I had to ask for it to be refilled. If you decide to use small cups, you have to be ready do check-backs for refills! Overall, I would recommend Mikado for sushi if you are in the area, but it is not worth going out of the way for. You also have to accept the splurge, as the prices are in line with a financial...
Read moreStarving after a gyno visit, we dropped in and found a pretty great menu. It seems that they're new to the neighborhood and are doing a kind of soft opening, with promotional specials (more below).
The decor was very cute. It's breezy in a way that many restaurants in the middle of office towers are, with fake plants and strong lighting, but it all felt very relaxed and the detailed attention to the service ware was superb. They have great reusable chopsticks and nice ceramic dishes. This may sound flippant, but I mean it earnestly. The soy sauce container is handsome, and the lil bunny chopstick holders, combined with the swan dishes for wasabi and ginger, melted my GF's heart. There's a tiny surprise in the swan dishes when you put a small amount of soy sauce in. Quack quack.
I wish there were more vegetarian rolls, but the ones I did order (avocado cucumber and sweet potato) were delicious. The sweet potatoes were very tasty, with some tempura crunch. I also got blistered shishitos—amazing. Salty, umami, so good.
GF's standard order of California roll and spicy tuna roll, she reports, was "Delicious." And she notes that the staff was very sweet and very helpful but unobtrusive.
So about this promotional special: They provided a first round of sake for free. I didn't have any, but I think they gave us a serving for two, which my GF had to herself. It was like a bottomless carafe of your choice of cold or hot sake. At lunch. So that was fun and...
Read moreHad a very average experience at this spot - some things were amazing while others drew away from the experience.
Ambience - nothing wrong here.felt cool and cozy, lighter cooling hues.
Hospitality - very mixed experience. Some tables were constantly being checked up on, ours wasn’t checked on even once and we had to work to get the servers attention. No pleasantries either and more so towards us which I can’t help but feel a bit racially about (ironically as it’s literally Japanese judging Indians).
While ordering sushi was asked for soup or salad but was given just the sushi until I reminded them about the soup.
Food - the cocktails were 10/10. We had a lychee martini and yuzu margarita. Flavourful and delicious.
In desserts, the matcha cheesecake was average while the coconut pudding was delectable, light, fluffy yet creamy.
In appetizers we had the chicken karaage which was juicy and tender but could do with a bit more flavor. In mains we had maki rolls. In generally the sushi was disappointing, the rice was medium/long grained, did not stick and the roll felt loose and sloppy. The imitation crab (although we were informed about it beforehand) was a 3/10, the shrimp tempura felt over oily and was more like a 4/10x, the yellowtail jalapeño was 7/10 & the spicy tuna was a 6/10. The wasabi was weak, the ginger was bland and the sushi was loosely rolled with soggy seaweed & large...
