Truly one of the most baffling and frankly unpleasant experiences I’ve ever had at a restaurant. When we showed up for our reservation, the restaurant was about 30% full, yet we were sat right behind the host’s stand awkwardly out of the way. The host proceeded to also be our waiter, which is fine but it was strange given that there were servers standing around. The host/server proceeded to tell us that we could sit at the much nicer sushi bar if we got omakase. We decided to stick with a la carte. Perhaps our decision not to get omakase offended the chefs or something because we simply did not get 4 of the 5 rolls we ordered.
The Prosecco I got came in an coupe and was flat. My husband’s IPA was not the best. The small bowl of edamame and the one roll we got was just okay.
About 30-40 minutes into waiting for the rest of our food, the host/our server comes over to tell us the food will be right out. Our food was not right out. 15-20 minutes later he comes back to explain that the chefs (who at this point had no one at the omakase bar and one of whom was wandering about the restaurant with nothing to do) had not gotten our order tickets “for some reason” and that our order would “be out in sixty seconds” and that we could “time” them.
Our food was not out in 60 seconds.
5 minutes later, I still did not see the chefs start on our food. The tables next to us who had JUST sat down were getting their food 5-10 minutes after ordering. We had been waiting for about an hour at this point and I was upset, hungry, and just wanted to leave.
Seeing that we were still waiting, a bartender came over and offered a complimentary round of drinks, which I really appreciated. But I was super over it and asked to just cancel the order and leave.
The process of getting the order canceled proceeded to take another 10 or so minutes. And when the manager came over with the payment device, she first offered us half off for our next visit. I told her we were visiting the city so would be unlikely to return and she gave us half off the food we did get. Which I guess is nice but the payment device still prompted me to tip a minimum of 18% 🙄
What made the experience baffling is instead of owning the mistake outright and immediately offering a round of drinks or something to snack on to hold us over, they kind of watched us to see if we were upset before taking any steps to address the situation beyond just informing us that the chefs never got our order.
Also, why had the chefs not started on our order upon this discovery?
It’s seems like this has happened multiple times at this restaurant based on other reviews. Can’t say that the fraction of our meal we did get makes up for the rest of the experience, even if we did get half off at the very...
Read moreFrom the moment we walked into Mishik, it felt like we stepped into something special: vibrant, but somehow calm at the same time. Celebrating a special occasion, we were greeted with warm, genuine smiles from a staff already attuned to our reservation’s note, instantly making us feel at home. It was a busy Friday night, but Mishik struck this beautiful balance b/t the lively hum of the bar and the intimate calm of the dining area. We chose seats at the sushi bar, which gave us a perfect front-row view of the action. The servers were entirely attentive yet knew precisely when to grant us the space to savor each moment.
And then, there was the food, and honestly, it was breathtaking. Chef Mark, a master at his craft, transformed fresh ingredients into masterpieces. The fish, handled with almost reverent care, was flawlessly prepared. I couldn’t stop watching him move; it was effortless, like second nature. Each piece he served was packed with subtle, layered flavors. Imagine the gentle hint of umami sweetness dancing on your palate and the soft firmness of the fish melding harmoniously with the perfectly seasoned rice. Chef Mark also took the time to tell us a bit about each dish, like where it came from, what inspired it, and that made it even more special. The accompanying elements were equally impressive. The soy sauce was beautifully subtle, adding a delicate roasted undertone. The pickled ginger was a revelation - light, balanced, and refreshing without overpowering anything.
We chose the chef’s tasting option, which blended omakase with kitchen dishes. It was a thoughtful progression, one dish leading into the next in a way that felt really intentional. Everything was paced just right, never rushed. And the drinks? Perfect. The house wine surprised us, in a good way, and the beer was crisp and ice-cold.
In a city like New York, where exceptional dining is no rarity, Mishik carves out a distinct space of its own. With its masterful blend of kitchen and omakase, sophisticated yet welcoming design, and warm service, Mishik delivers an experience that lingers long after the last bite. We left full, yes, but more than that, we left feeling enriched, already...
Read moreIn my 4 years of living in NYC, I’ve never felt strongly enough to leave a complaint on Google Reviews. But, I think it’s important to note that my experience here seems drastically different from the expectations shared on Google so I thought it would be helpful for an additional perspective.
My partner and I were both so excited to try this spot based on all of the raving reviews on Google. However, we left feeling really disappointed. The food was very average for how much we paid and the sizes of the dishes were even smaller than typical tasting menus, especially in NYC. Out of all 6 courses, the only memorable bites were the uni and the waygu (which was incredibly tiny for an entree). The service was also really slow as it took us 30 minutes to finally flag someone down to take our order which consequently led our dinner to be an hour longer than we had anticipated. This couple at the table next to us had even asked the restaurant to speed up their orders since they were going to be late to their next reservation (as they also didn’t anticipate the service to be so slow).
Overall, I’m hoping it was just a fluke this day since there are so many good reviews… but as someone who rarely complains about experiences and loves to try a lot of good eats in NYC, this restaurant definitely left a sour taste in my mouth. I think you can definitely get your moneys worth elsewhere for higher quality, better tastes, and better service. The restaurant interior was...
