TLDR: Writing October 2023, Mockingbird has declined substantially over the past six months. There are cheaper places to get ripped off in the neighborhood.
This place used to be great! The tacos were pricy, but the portions were generous, the service swift and friendly, and the specials were always interesting.
Now the portions are inconsistent, as are the contents of the tacos. Too much cheese, eggs are stiff, bacon is too small for the taco, etc etc.
Also, this morning the server opened on time, but the cook wasn’t there. When the cook finally arrived, she was rude to me- I didn’t say anything to her, but she told me I was “just gonna have to wait” with a sneer. Really brought some unnecessary hostility to my morning- she seemed upset that I showed up when they opened. The woman working the counter was very nice, though.
Get a BEC at a nearby bodega, or a pastry next door at Hamlet coffee, which is fantastic. Don’t waste...
Read moreThis restaurant and its meager tacos are an abomination. They’re small, bland and overpriced. Of course, this is New York — many people know nothing about tacos, and can’t be expected to have a good sense of quality. But the customers who are keeping this disaster in business should know better. You clearly have disposable income. Why not fly to LA? Try HomeState, or any of the myriad taco trucks that give better quality food with bigger portions for half as much money. You can find higher quality, more authentic tacos on Flatbush at Jauja for much less. Treat yourself better than this. Anyone who patronizes this restaurant does an act of violence to their bodies and to the neighborhood. Yes, Flatbush is changing — change is inevitable. But it doesn’t have to look like this. Let us all choose quality, and not drift listlessly toward...
Read more$6 for an unremarkable taco the size of my finger. Meh. Seems pretty gentrification-y. I got the potato+cheese and the bacon+egg+cheese. No salsa. Long wait, but prob just because it is poplar. $15 after tax and tip for exactly what you see in the pictures. They are always out of something unless you get there before early and they are usually out by around 10:30am. To their credit, the taco tortilla itself is made there and is delicious, but the tacos are otherwise unremarkable. The bacon is very smoky, and in combination with the type of cheese they use, gives me that smoked cheese taste which I don't love. This place is great if you are a rich person who wakes up early and...
