Read moreFor years, this joint was known as Ben's. Now it's Mr. Broadway. Ok. No big deal, right? Wrong. Though the space is the same, the atmosphere has changed. The food has really changed. Ben's had the best sandwiches in the neighborhood. The neighborhood being The Garment District. I especially loved their brisket on rye with mustard & gravy on the side. A pile of not-too-thinly sliced, glistening brown, beef brisket with no adornments. Just the juicy meat. I'd sometimes get a side of Ben's thick fries. That was a lunch you could not do everyday. Once a month was a great treat. My company moved down 7th Ave to 35th street, so, I haven't been to Ben's since Mr. Broadway took over. I finally got there yesterday. I ordered the brisket on rye, naturally. I was very disappointed. The paper-thin meat was not brown, it was pink! In all my years on this planet, ordering brisket from many kosher delis in NYC, I've never seen pink brisket. It was a bit stomach churning. I lifted up the top slice of rye to get a close look at the meat. Though the sandwich felt warm, the meat looked uncooked. Oh, and it was veery fatty. I called over a waiter to ask if this was brisket. I wondered if I was brought the wrong stuff. Maybe it was undercooked corned beef. I was told yes, this is brisket. Ok, I'll give it a shot. I slathered mustard on the sand with and took a bite. Oy! It was like biting into thin, uncooked, fatty... something. The nauseating texture overpowered my tastebuds so I can't report on whether it at least tasted like brisket. I sent it back (I never send back food, but this was bad). The second sandwich was better. The meat looked cooked and it wasn't as fatty. It was ok. The gravy was not brown, it was the color of an Americano coffee. The flavor wasn't as beefy as I remembered Ben's gravy being. The fries were also disappointing. They weren't big, hand cut chunks of potato. They were fast-food restaurant size with a crunchy coating. A coating! And they were overly greasy. I did eat the sandwich. I didn't eat the fries. The Cole slaw and pickles were excellent. And they had Dr. Brown's Cel-ray celery flavored soda. My fave. I'll give the place another shot. For old time sake. But, I now know to order a sandwich with meat...
Read moreMy recent experience at Mr. Broadway Restaurant highlighted a few areas in need of improvement, particularly in professionalism and the overall essence of fine dining. The hospitality was average, and my waiter, while trying his best, fell short of expectations. I found myself asking three times for a lemon to accompany my water, which seemed excessive, and when I later requested more water, the lemon unfortunately didn't come along with it. The portion sizes were quite light; the rye bread used for the sandwiches was unremarkable. However, the coleslaw and pickles were delightful—arguably some of the best I've encountered—but I suspect they were sourced externally rather than made in-house. As for the meats, specifically the pastrami and corned beef, I would rate them a C. They didn't hold a candle to Katz's or the former Carnegie Deli. A particular disappointment was when I asked for mustard; they presented me with a container of generic brown mustard. For a restaurant that seeks to embody an upscale vibe, I believe that even something as simple as serving mustard in a classy glass container with a proper spoon and lid should be standard practice. With a few simple adjustments, Mr. Broadway could significantly elevate the dining experience and attract repeat customers. Personally, while I may return for convenience, I didn't find anything about this visit that compelled me to come back in search of that “wow” factor except the french fries were delightful. On a positive note, the establishment was clean, including the bathrooms, which I appreciated. The atmosphere was friendly, and the staff genuinely tried their best, even if they didn't meet the standards of high-end waitstaff. It’s clear they want to deliver quality service, but the experience felt more casual than upscale. My intention in providing this feedback is not purely critical; instead, I hope it serves as constructive insight. With some minor improvements, Mr. Broadway has the potential to become a cherished spot for regular patrons, including locals. Thank you for...
