Don't be fooled by the hole in a wall feel when you first get off outside the hotel. It is hard to miss it since it doesn't have a big lobby like traditional hotels but rather only a glass door that faces the curb... so quite like local hotels in Paris :) There is a big overhead vertical sign though hanging from the building, so keep an eye out for that.
PROS: Great location. Just a block away from Broadway street. Few mins wall from Times Square. Lots of places to eat at. Didn't feel unsafe at all when I came in at 2 am since the adjacent streets were busy even then Good sized rooms... I mean let's admit it, real estate is expensive in New York, people may not live in shoe boxes but they do live in closets. However, rooms at Doxie were quite spacious. The hallways were not very wide but enough wide for people to walk comfortably with their luggage. But the rooms themselves had enough space for 2 big pieces of luggage, had an open wardrobe, a bench, a wall mounted table, a chair, and a mini fridge. The bathroom was quite spacious with a standing shower and beautiful tilework that spelled Have A NYC day :) The room I stayed in had a platform bed, so technically people can stow their luggage under the bed too but I didn't have to. The AC and mini fridge worked great. The walls had a nice vinyl work giving the rooms the New Yorker feel. If you want a microwave, there's one near front desk.
The rooms do have windows but there's nothing to look at really since they face a wall. Great staff! Amazing service. Can't say enough about the service. Everyone I interacted with was professional and friendly. If you book directly with them, they also work with you to accommodate an early checkin or late checkout Plenty of places to eat or shop at. 2 bros is right across the street. 7/11 is 200 ft away. Chipotle is across the street. Since this is in midtown, lots to offer for entertainment. One Sunday afternoon I just walked to Lyric theater to watch Harry Potter and the cursed child... a 9 min walk.
CONS: Now this didn't bother me but if you really really need to see the sun from your room, you won't be able to in most rooms at Doxie since it is flanked by buildings on both sides.
Overall, I will come and stay here and recommend it to others too. It's a gem hidden in a hole in a wall :) This was a really good value for money!
PS: Shoutout to Sydney. A pretty young lady at the front desk, who is friendly, kind and just amazing at...
Read moreThis is a good place to stay for a short, non-fussy visit to NYC but I don't think I'll be returning. My husband and I stayed here at the end of February (before things got crazy in the city) and wanted to try a boutique hotel experience as opposed to the usual accommodations we have in NYC. To start, there was smoke so thick in the lobby from people outside that my eyes were watering as we checked in. There also isn't much of a lobby aside from two chairs and a vending machine, so it was cramped while we waited 15 minutes for someone to arrive to check us in (it was 8pm). Once you get room keys, you can take the stairs or an elevator so tiny and slow that you could race someone up the stairs carrying their bags and they'd probably get there faster. It's definitely not an accessible hotel to someone in a wheelchair. I did appreciate the design of the room, I loved the map of Brooklyn on the wall and the tiled bathroom, plus the eco-friendly soap pump in the shower to replace throwing out many miniatures... however there was no hair conditioner, only body soap and shampoo, so bring your own. The walls were very thin, we could head the TV in the next room clearly and the conversations of our floormates late into the night. It seems to be an old converted apartment complex, so I'm not sure if some folks still live there but there was movement of rolling suitcases all night and construction work (hammering and drilling) all day as they continue renovations. The windows were also frosted, so don't come for the view or even light, we often didn't know what time it was when we woke up (and yes I know this isn't uncommon for the city).
In terms of technology, there were only 2 wall outlets in the room, one in the bedroom and one in the bathroom. Which normally isn't an issue, but charging 2 phones and a portable battery was too much for this room to handle. The internet went out on the 2nd night and stayed out for the duration of our 5 days (despite them having 4 or 5 networks) but then when we went to watch TV one evening, 15/20 of the channels were mainly static so that was lacking too.
In the end, you get what you paid for. The cute design and friendly staff don't make up for what was lacking so I won't be back, but I can't say I wouldn't recommend it for a very...

The hotel itself was decent and convenient to Times Square.
However, I paid for the hotel in full before my arrival. When I got there they told me at the front desk I needed to pay an additional $100 deposit separately. It was late and I was tired so I did.
I checked out 2 days later and was told my deposit had been released and would be credited to my account in a day or two.
It’s now been 2 weeks. I’ve been in touch with the hotel several times since and have been given different excuses over and over. First they said it takes 3-5 days. Then it was 5-8 business days. Then I was told it was just a hold and they never actually took the deposit, but my bank statement shows otherwise. The money was taken from my account that night and has not been refunded. They’re blaming it on my bank, who I’ve now had to file a fraud dispute with in an attempt to get my money back.
My money was deducted instantly from my account and in this year 2020, no one is stupid enough to believe it takes 2 weeks to complete a payment transaction. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and assumed there was a mistake that could be resolved.
Now, after the way I was forced into paying the deposit “separately” on the spot when I arrived, combined with the list of different excuses I’ve since been given by the hotel as to why I haven’t been given my money back, I am convinced this is just a scam they use to take advantage of tourists. They know the guest will be out of town in a few days or so, and the difficulty of filing a dispute and everything else on top of it to get your money back, many people probably just drop it out of frustration and the hotel gets to keep the money. I’m not doing that, I’ve filed a dispute and will continue to pursue my hard earned money that was taken from me.
As I said, the hotel is decent and the price is reasonable for the location, but there are plenty of other hotels in the area that I’ve stayed at, that are nicer and reasonably priced. I would highly recommend looking into any of those, before taking the risk of having your money taken from you...
