Went to this bar to kill time with a friend while waiting for my girlfriend. We are vegan so I thought this bar would be perfect to grab a bite and a drink. When we arrived, it was pretty dead with most people sitting outside and about 5 people at the bar.
The bartender was pretty nice. When I realized there was no cellular service inside the establishment- they provided the WiFi no problem when I asked. But when I ordered food, they let me know that the only vegan option they had was a vegan cheese pizza. It took about 15 minutes to finish because they said the cheese was frozen and had to defrost. When it came out it was very lack luster.. it was like a frozen pie you bought from the supermarket. But the pickle back margarita I ordered was good.
Here's why I probably won't return to this bar - I guess we came on "karaoke night". The guy hosting the karaoke came from the back of the bar and asked everyone at the bar ( which wasn’t many people - maybe about 5) BESIDES my friend and I if they wanted to participate. They all declined. So he left. Maybe 15 minutes later... he came out and AGAIN walks past my friend and I then asks everyone else.
Which was very weird being that we were the only people of color at the bar.
The energy I got at this bar was unwelcoming. But I feel like it has so...
Read moreThe only reason I'm giving this bar four, rather than five, stars is because the lock on one of the bathroom doors was broken, and a girl walked in on me peeing even though another girl was supposed to be keeping bathroom-door-watch for me.
I came to Pine Box Rock Shop for the Vegan Shop Up, which was held there on Sunday, June 10th. The Vegan Shop Up was basically a gathering of vegan vendors, and they set up tables and wares throughout the bar. I think a bar wasn't the best venue to host such an event, just because it was crowded and difficult to navigate, but I'm glad I had the chance to visit Pine Box Rock Shop.
I love the beer selection and the unique mixed drink offerings that are scribbled in chalk on the wall. Also, I'd love to come back to try the homemade pretzels and vegan empanadas. Instead, I sampled some vegan food from the vendors at the Shop Up.
I'm rather intimidated by and have had bad experiences with "hipsters," but every person I spoke to at this bar was super friendly. I left Williamsburg/Bushwick with a more positive impression of the kind of people who live and...
Read moreI love this bar. I first became acquainted with the Pine Box when I was just a wee tourist staying a few blocks away at the New York Loft Hostel and was thrilled when I found out that it was a vegan bar. Now I live just four subway stops away and get to frequent a bit more than I have in the past. I've gone to karaoke twice here: the first time was in the summer and I had to wait two hours to sing my song (Linkin Park's "In the End") and I went again last week and only waited about 15 minutes for my song to come up. The crowd is not pretentious, the drinks are great, service is grand, and they have vegan empanadas from V-Spot. I would love to swing by for more of their events. Oh, you can also bring your dog inside (or if you're me, you can make friends with stranger's dogs).
I'm really looking forward to checking out their new sister bar,...
