A fellow hispanic friend and I attended a collab Dia de Los Murertos pop-up both Thursday and Friday to nab some EPIC @BorderTown tacos guisados. Neither of us had tried Sobre Masa yet but it was on our list of places to dine at so we figured this would be a great opportunity to try their mexican sweet breads as a precursor. Both days we arrived to find a nonsensical line/ set-up for ordering, waiting for, and receiving our orders. We waited much too long to receive pastries that were sitting right in front of us just waiting for someone to bag. The line was mostly short, the problem was just that it wasn’t moving at all. Ultimately, that wasn’t a make or break deal. The make or break deal was the gnarly and nasty attitude we both received separately from the woman taking orders, ON BOTH DAYS. She had provided ZERO hospitality or information about the menu and scoured and scoffed at questions regarding the pastries. Had Bordertown not been a part of this pop-up, I would have told her exactly where to go and what to do there. My friend and I deleted Sobre Masa from a group google maps NYC dining list were a part of with a much more specific note about the cashier woman there. I hope BorderTown thinks twice about continuing to do business with SM, especially given the other horrible reviews. To add, the vanilla conchas we both ordered were burnt and tasted that way. Paying $5 for a small average tasting burnt mexican sweet bread is a rip-off. I’m so glad I didn’t have to spend a ton of money on a dinner at SM to know that they are awful in every respect! Thankfully, there are now SO MANY authentic mexican spots to dine at like: Bordertown pop-ups, taqueria ramirez, rey de reyes food truck, La Superior, Nenes, Cemitas El Tigre, Los Tacos #1, BirriaLandia Food Truck, etc etc
Response to Rika: I’d love to confront you in person. as I stated before, the reason I didn’t in real time was out of respect for Bordertown. I’d appreciate if the owners were present while we meet. I’ll go ahead and give you a call after posting this to set up a day and time. When you told me to hand my receipt to the chef, the owners of sober Massa were in front of me as well not just Jorge so I did not know which chef you were referring to. This goes to show how confusing and unorganized the whole set up was, but you...
Read moreFINALLY a worth the while Mexican restaurant in Bushwick. Bushwick has so many Mexican eateries but the majority lack care to ingredients, service and atmosphere. Sobre Masa does not. Excellent wine, beer, tequila and Mezcal selection from Mexico- not just your typical selection.
Guacamole was delicious and fresh. For $16 was it overpriced? Heck yes but anywhere in NYC expect to pay and arm and a leg extra. Also came with a selection of 3 salsas and a fantastic garlic aioli.
3 scallops for $27 also very overpriced but I didn’t mind as they were cooked perfectly, super fresh and with a great pepita sauce. The pepita sauce did not overpower the scallop which is very easy to do.
Brussel sprout app was a very surprising star. I never though the acidity of a lime would raise the profile but they were totally crave worthy. This is a must order (and this is coming from a super meat eater).
Steak quesadilla- steak was cooked medium rare and tender. Steak was the star and didn’t need the cheese or tortilla but was very good. I felt the steak might have been better on its own with some sort of side but quality was there all around.
Chicken mole enchiladas, definitely best mole I have had in awhile. I have had better in Puebla and Oaxaca but that’s a super unfair comparison. Not too sweet and with a depth of flavor. Chicken was cooked very well and not dried out.
Aside from Brussel Sprouts the other hands down star was the flan. I love flan and get it often to only be disappointed. This flan was perfect. Creamy, smooth, not to sweet and not too heavy or dense.
Guac with chips, Brussel sprout app, scallop app, one steak quesadilla, one order of mole enchiladas, a flan, 2 beers and 1 michelada with 20% tip cost $200. Everything in NYC is a complete rip off at this point but I don’t mind paying when the food is good, the service is on point and the atmosphere is good. Whoever is running this place cares and it is so nice to see.
I will go back and I don’t...
Read moreCurrent residents of Bushwick should be overjoyed because Sobre Masa is yet another gem of an eatery in their neighborhood. My friend told me about this place over a year ago and he was raving about their amazing fish tacos. The memory of those fish tacos is what drove us to go check out Sobre Masa a few days ago.
What we soon found out, was that the menu changes frequently and the fish tacos were no longer on it. This was only a slight bummer, because everything we did end up having was absolutely great! The highlights for me were their guacamole (and accompanying sauces), lamb belly barbacoa, and the passionfruit/carrot juice.
The guacamole was the most seasoned and flavorful guac I've ever had. No cap, no exaggeration. Some may find it on the salty side but it never crossed that line for me. The tortilla chips were perfect and strong. They won't fold under pressure and break when you go for that scoop of green goodness. A little toum, green salsa, and either red or orange sauce for some spicy kick on that chip is the way to go.
If the lamb belly is on the menu, it is a must try! Pro-tip: save some of the guac and sauced to have with your lamb belly tacos and get creative. The lamb belly is juicy, flavorful, and a perfect protein to go with their delicious tortillas.
The passionfruit juice is the base agua fresca for one of their alcoholic cocktails. While it may be a little pricy to some for juice, it was so refreshing, perfectly sweet, and I enjoyed ever last drop.
The restaurant just has a great vibe to it. Nice lighting, not loud or noisy, friendly staff, quick service. I was blown away and will absolutely...
