This is a bit sad to write since it used to be better and is why I came back with some friends visiting from out of state.
The service was okay when we got some, but was sadly pretty scarce, not sure if it's short staffing or something.
We ordered some iced coffees to try to wake up a bit, and after over a half hour we finally got an opportunity to ask about it when we flagged a staff to come by since we had also been ready to order food for a while. They said it was coming, which I think was code for they forgot but I'll remind them, but they still didn't bring it out and we had to flag another staff down to ask about them.
I wish I could say the food was worth it, but a lot of it was just okay and pretty small for what you pay. The challah in particular was quite a let down — it was that kind of spongy white bread you buy for cheap at a supermarket in the shape of a mini challah. Really don't know why this is what they do now considering how easy it is to make good challah.
The latkes were tasty but 3 small latkes for $15 feels pretty over the top. The Reunion breakfast tasted pretty good but was really little food. The shakshuka was okay, but again, pretty small and the eggs were more than poached.
Also a weird thing they left was a bunch of black grease on the outside of the mini cast iron it came in, which was touching the spongy challah when it came out. Don't understand why they couldn't even wipe it.
Don't think I can come back again, which is sad. I hope their staff get back to the better food and service they used to have, because the vibe and decorations are nice, because leaving hungry and feeling like you could have made the food better at home in less time is a bummer. No bad feelings towards any staff member in particular, just wish the...
Read moreJust had breakfast at Re.Union. While it's been years since we've lived in NYC, we are well traveled and have dined at every rage of eatery from 5 star gourmet to food trucks to roadside kiosk. Re.Union is just around the corner from our airbnb. We started with a brunch menu where the copy under each heading was barely readable; the font was too light. We ordered frittatas and half-caf coffee. Shortly after we sat down, a young man came to us with an almost scolding tone to say they didn't make drip de-caf and that they could make it an expresso. While I appreciate that drip de-caf may not be part of their model, it certainly was not our fault the order was placed that way; the person taking our order should've informed us. The coffee arrived, and after adding just a dash of milk, it was barely warm. What that says is it either sat for too long before being served or they served it in very cold cups, or prepared it lukewarm. So now we have barely warm coffee, that was bitter to boot. After watching three other people, who arrived after we did get their food, my husband inquired what was happening with ours. He was told it was in the works. A short time after that it did arrive piping hot and tasty. The server apologized that it was delayed and stated that Re.Union bakes their frittatas and it takes longer. Being quite hungry when we arrived, had we known we would've made other choices. Our advice to the person taking orders at the counter would be to let customers know that they're ordering something that will take longer than usual to prepare. With that knowledge one can make a decision to wait or place an order that arrives in a reasonable time. Based on the lack of informed service and being a bit overpriced for what you get, we...
Read moreTo be honest, very rarely do I find myself going all the way to Brooklyn from the city (though it’s not that far away). However, meeting up with a friend I haven’t seen in two years at Reunion just seemed so fitting. I found myself quite happy because I found a great new brunch spot to go to in NY.
I ordered the Incredible Shawarma, which not only smelled amazing but also tasted amazing! All the different spices combined quite well and I found myself finishing my plate a little too quickly. The dish itself has a very slight kick and creaminess that comes from the tahini (almost resembling a curry). It is quite a hardy choice with chicken and potatoes, so I would definitely come hungry.
My friend also had great things to say about her Schnitzel Sandwich, which she had been eyeing as soon as we stepped into the restaurant.
Of course, we had to order some drinks in celebration of our reunion. Ordered some mimosas (pomegranate and orange) because apparently that’s what a staple classic brunch calls for?
Jokes aside, had a really good meal. The desserts, which we ordered after chatting a bit, were delicious. My friend ordered a piece of baklava, while I ordered their passion fruit ice cream. The ice cream was just the right amount of tangy and sweet and perfect for the hot summers in NY.
Really liked the atmosphere of the restaurant. It’s a relatively small restaurant but they make good use of their indoor and outdoor space. I would definitely recommend sitting in their indoor space just based on how cute and vintage their...
