I will preface this review by saying I can't go in with a completely "clean slate."
Previously I lived in very close walking distance to Sabor a Mexico near 91st street. I now live in very close distance to Sabor a Mexico II (on 77th street). So my review is based on comparing it to the other location. (And honestly I have no clue if the two locations are related in anyway, or maybe they used to be and it split from each other… I have no clue).
So firstly, both locations are tiny, but shockingly, Sabor A Mexico II is the smaller location. Sabor A Mexico has about 10 tables, where II has just 7.
The menu selection at Sabor II appears to be a little larger.
Sabor on 91st street gives unlimited baskets of complimentary chips for the table. Sabor II does not provide this. (They give no complimentary chips at all).
Sabor II is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than Sabor on 91st. Some items are double the price at Sabor II. This is partially justified by the fact that the portion sizes at Sabor II are indeed larger. However, not so much larger that the price difference should be as significant as it is. And on that same note, the margaritas which are the same size at each location, cost $13 at Sabor II compared to $10 at the location on 91st.
I found the food quality to be excellent at Sabor II, which is the same way I feel about the food at Sabor at 91st. Excellent excellent excellent food. Can't fault them there.
The service at both locations is about the same as well. Both locations are small so it can never really be "too crowded" but I notice that at both spots, servers rarely come over to you and check on you on their own volition. But they are usually hanging in the dining area and flagging one down to get what you need is easy to do. They don't disappear.
Overall, I am giving Sabor II 4 stars. For what it's worth, I previously reviewed Sabor at 91st and gave it 5 stars. Essentially, both restaurants are the same in terms of their service, size, and food quality. The biggest difference is the price. And Sabor II is very expensive for what it is. Sabor at 91st was kind of a go-to destination when my girlfriend and I couldn't decide where to go to dinner. And it was easy to choose to go there because the food was excellent AND the prices were cheap.
Sabor II, because of its price structure, is harder to be a go-to spot when we can't decide where to go. It's just too pricy to be a default spot. However, I'll certainly have no issue returning here on days that I get paid and when I am in the mood for Mexican food.
On other occasions, I think taking the M15 bus along first avenue to go to the 91st location will be worthwhile. The M15 has a stop on first avenue at 77th street as well as...
Read moreBeware if you’re a minority. Considering this place is owned by minorities, you’ll face judgement and feel the racism. We were in a group of 3 and we got sat in the corner of the restaurant. One of the seats were all the way by the wall so you had to go over one chair to get to the other. Second, we weren’t even given a menu. They gave us ONE to go menu. A white couple came in after us and they were immediately greeted and given a dine in menu. It was by our facial expressions that they realized they probably should give us a dine in menu :). It only took them 5 minutes to give it to us. Third, my friend ordered nachos with queso. They brought out a plate of chips with some melted Kraft cheese on top. This clearly wasn’t what she asked for and we overheard them talking in Spanish about the order. When they realized we heard them they tried clarifying saying that “In this restaurant we do it differently yadda yadda yadda.” Luckily they didn’t charge my friend for that abomination. Then, when we were going to pay, they failed to mention that there’s a $10-15 minimum on card. When I was paying, I emphasized that I wanted to pay using credit, but it kept asking me for a pin. The woman was rude about it, not being understanding saying “well I don’t know what you want me to do.”, not offering another solution. NEVER will spend my time and money at this horrible racist establishment ever again. Please don’t...
Read moreI have been ordering from this restaurant for a while (2 years). The service however is not what it used to be. My last order the chips were either burnt (didn’t know that was possible) or undercooked and soggy. Condiments were missing from the nachos. My girlfriend’s quesadilla was missing sides as well. I called the restaurant and was told I would get a call later that night. FIFTEEN hours later I got a call from a random voicemail. I’m a physician and had an extremely busy week. By the time I got back to them I was told I could get extra condiments and sides with my order. I had to barter to get a discount. I was also chastised for taking so long to call them back.
Then when I called to place the order the manager started to argue with me that the quesadilla would be the same and she didn’t believe me about my issue from the previous time. And that the way i claimed my order should have been was wrong and has been for 2 years. Very rude. I will be taking my business elsewhere in the future.
After reading other recent reviews, I realized others have been having these issues as well. This restaurant clearly does not care about its customers or customer service.
I used to be in the restaurant business and my motto for my employees was: the customer is always right. I was being reasonable. She lost a loyal customer who has recommended this restaurant in the past over condiments and...
