This place is amazing!!! I've eaten a ton of high quality sushi, from Michelin star 10-seaters to the best of the best in Manhattan & abroad. It's my favorite cuisine, and if stranded on a desert island - it'd be my go to choice. So believe me when I say this place is a MUST TRY!
I actually didn't want to praise it too much since it'll mean longer wait times for me, but this place deserves it. If you're looking for the best Omakase in Astoria and at a super affordable price, this is the place! [A diverse and unique 10 piece set for $50!]
Alex (the head chef) - is a humble, culinary genius (but he doesn't know it yet). His skills lay in his unique ability to maintain a high degree of cultural authenticity, traditional techniques, and reliance on high quality fish. But then he takes it to a new level by adding just the right amount of style & flare. Thus, he doesn't over power the fish (like with flashy sauces or other additives that other places do), but creates a unique and well-paired blend that highlights and elevates the flavor of the fish. (It's really cool, and you'll get what I mean when you try it!)
I've been there several times and will probably have them cater my birthday. In fact, it was so good, it prompted me to finally write a real Yelp review (finally got me)!
Lastly, it's BYOB (for now)... so if you want a fine sake to pair with, there is a great liquor store on 36th Ave & 31st street [across from the KeyFood] that has a copious supply of good sake and other spirits. So let the good times roll! Probably head there tonight for that 10...
Read moreI know a 1 star is terrible but I have to leave an honest review so people don’t have to go throw what my wife and I did. We had the omakase for 2 priced at 210$ witch is a realistic price for the restaurant quality and caliber. The fish was not fresh but not all of it, we had a few nice nigiri pieces. The shrimp, uni and waygu was disgusting, fishy and the meat was so undercooked notice the fact that it’s A1 wagyu or maybe not even Japanese, maybe it was American wagyu. Later on that day my wife and I had diarrhea and vomiting, and trust me when I tell you we are not new to this, we are experts on eating and consuming raw fish and sushi in general but we wanted to give it a try due to the fact it’s in the neighborhood and you never know what hidden gems you can find but this place is definitely not one of them. Maybe the regular sushi rolls and tamaki style and all the main dishes are better, can’t judge on that part because we didn’t try any of it. But I’m only reviewing the 210$ omakase witch was...
Read moreIt’s BYOB and has Omakase options — best of both worlds. Seriously, this place is such a neighborhood gem and doesn’t get enough credit for the quality and creativity along with a very reasonable price point. Chef Alex is dedicated to his craft and you’ll have such a wonderful experience if you sit at the bar and see him work his magic.
I usually get the omakase because you get to try so many different dishes—all melt in your mouth. It’s hard to choose a fav, but three amigos is up there. When they have ankimo (monkfish liver aka the foie gras of the sea) or the fresh oysters, I can’t resist. Acquired tastes for sure, but when the craving hits I know where to go.
I’ve also ordered just rolls and chirashi bowls, also delicious and solid. It’s great bringing friends here to try out more of the menu as well as enjoy some peaceful solo dining.
