Astoria Bookshop — Local services in New York

A really adorable, well-curated local bookstore (with a much-needed public bathroom) and many very helpful, friendly staff members. I want to give it five stars for that reason alone. I’ve made many purchases at this location and the old one on 31st street and used to love to go and browse whenever I have free time.

Unfortunately, I’m taking two full stars off because there is one worker who makes me feel like I’m not allowed to do that. I’ve been avoiding visiting the store because this person (even if unintentionally) really soured the atmosphere for me on several visits.

Most bookstore staff members understand that the sorts of curious, socially awkward souls who like to spend time browsing bookstores often do not want to have to answer a bunch of questions about what they’re looking for. They know to just LET customers browse, rather than hover over them trying to problem-solve.

I wouldn’t want to see anyone get in trouble over this, but it makes me really uncomfortable feeling like I’m supposed to know what I want and just get in and out. I hope the store takes a bit more care in the future to make sure all in-store employees understand how bookstores are supposed to feel for...

Impressive and well-curated variety of books, I always find something new to read on the bookseller’s staff picks shelf. They do gift wrapping (and have lots of other gift items and a great sticker collection), have a great rewards program, and they host incredible book launches and community events. Their selection celebrates the diversity of Queens, which makes this shop one of my favorite places to be in the neighborhood - it’s a fun bonus that they have a back porch I can read on after I pick up my latest read. A well designed, inviting store with many recommendations and easy to find what you’re looking for. I tried to buy a puzzle that was not available due to the manufacturer, and the bookshop went back-and-forth with me by email and allowed me to apply the amount to a different purchase instead.
