I am from stapleton , staten island... I come to places to sing for people to make them happy because i can sing pretty well.. So i came to skinny dennis because i heard they had a country-oke(karaoke) tonight . so i go and i am there 30 minutes early ,i like to stretch a little bit to have a good body mind connection before i sing , so i can be prepared to do it well. I get a drink and am drinking it when a woman Townsend (hostess) hand me a paper of songs . after , i go to Townsend , i choose some songs tell her ill sing them and gave the paper back. I come back to my table to see my drinks have been moved my some woman and her friend. I started talking regularly with them but they gave me issues like calling me names for no reason and implying that i was attracted to her in any way . so i laughed in her face and told her she thought way to highly of herself . thats when she got more upset and threatened to call security on me . so i said "i dont come here to talk to you .. I came here to sing , bye " and i left ... Townsend started speaking on the mic and was telling the crowd how she was in a polygamous relationship(more than one parteners) and how she was upset that her boyfriend was going on a date with another woman tonight .. But she pretended that it was funny and she was okay with it .. So as a natural reaction im in the crowd shaking my head a bit because .. Why do we need to know that ? You are embarrassing yourself badly ... Stop it . but if you want to talk about ur personal life i can shake my head and thats it .. So after that i went outside to smoke and i came back in ... Then Townsend called security over and then he came to me and said i gotta go outside . and i wasnt allowed to come back inside again ... It was very cold and i came here to be here and sing fof people ... So i sang outside and stated there alll night until the people inside felt "threatened"(probably.. Im not sure how they felt )or "uncomfortable" . nonetheless i had good conversation with the people that were there that came outside to smoke. The drummer of the band helped me and was genuine .. The security guy was also understanding of my situation .... The townsend woman and a pair of friends one Venezuelan girl (who threatened me with security) and her friend that had big eyes (probably on coke) and was from alabama... They were very unkind and caused me to have a bad night for no reason other than whatever bias and hate they have in their heart ... I am 22 years old and i am beginning to see how people can hate themselves so much to where they will hurt other strangers to make themselves feel good .... Also if me standing there was such a problem and they felt uncomfortable of any sort we can talk about it and have a mutual understanding .. Small...
Read moreBeware. I used to go to this place 3x a week before the pandemic and then moved out of New York, it had really been the real deal.
I came back this weekend and the first place I wanted to go was here.
I've recently moved to WV, where the DMV has admitted their ID's don't always scan properly -- it's happened multiple times in-state, and security or police just say it's fine because of the known bug.
I was blindsided when mine scanned as invalid and the bouncer confiscated the entirely legal ID; claimed to use a police ID scanner.
A bartender outside told me there was no manager on duty and the bouncer could not be reasoned with, leaving me with a legal ID that had been stolen by said bouncer, leaving me effectively stranded in the city -- and even with the pledge that police could back me up, he kept my valid ID.
The NYPD was able to get it back in under a minute as I proved via the multiple other identifications I had on my person that I am who I am -- and a quick scan of the actual police system the officer had on-hand proved it was not stolen and that the bouncers "police scanner" wasn't such.
It is very unnerving and unprofessional that there was no manager to take charge of the situation, and that their employed bouncer would act as he did, and effectively steal a valid ID -- as I mentioned the DMV would back me up as to the issue they have been having with new-resident ID's.
There was no apology or anything for something so serious. It is a sad thing I can never go there again, as no former regular should be victimized and treated so unethically.
The hundreds of dollars I spent there over the years, and the dozens of times I went as a New York resident didn't help at all with what was a simple, known technological issue that turned into a nightmare ordeal.
Management is free to reach out to discuss further as I am happy to offer a full accounting of what went on so that they may take...
Read moreThis is probably the only place in NYC that feels like a real honky tonk. The decor makes you feel you stepped into the White Horse, the old Horseshoe Lounge, or Ginny's Little Longhorn in Austin, Texas. The live music features some of New York's best traditional country, Rockabilly and blues, plus a smattering of related styles. The drinks are very reasonable, and the mixed drinks are extremely potent. Everyone talks about Willie's Frozen (bourbon laced) coffee, but that's just a fun novelty. Serious drinkers should try the 32 ounce Bourbon Mint Sweet Tea, or the One Pound Margarita. Beers are plentiful and cheap as well. The bartenders are all fantastic and serve you up your drink with a portion of hot roasted peanuts. Just drop your shells on the floor, like you used to do at the Ground Round back in the 80s..
The crowd that frequents this hillbilly oasis is mixed, from the more serious hardcore daytime crowd of old farts, to the Douchebags that pack the place on weekend nights. . Be warned that Friday and Saturday nights will be so crowded that you'll want to be ANYWHERE else. However, the sweet spot is any week night, where you'll see fantastic bands and even have room to two step, if you're not a shoe gazing hipster who can't have fun.
Having moved from Austin to NYC, this place is where I go when I feel homesick and need to crown myself King of Barstool Mountain. Enjoy, and tip the bartenders...
