I was rudely embarrassed and targeted by an employee… dare I say it was racially motivated. To make it short, when I tried to order my drink the employee kept calling out how my drink was more money than I had on my gift card. I noticed his tone and quickly realized he was trying to belittle me. I quickly mentioned that I could pay for my drink… (though he tried to make it seem like I couldn’t). I was completely over the way I was being treated, already feeling out of place as being a black woman in a store filled with majority white customers, I left. As I was on my way out, to my confirmation of his tone, he proceeded to say.. OUT LOUD.. to the rest of the store “obviously you can’t pay for your drink”…. I went back, and proceeded to ask why he would say that to me. He proceeded to go back and forth and continuously called me (a black woman) hostile. I asked to speak to the manager because the whole situation was completely uncalled for, I was currently being degraded and disrespected by an employee, someone who is supposed to HELP me. He proceeded to tell me that he was in fact the manager and proceeded to antagonize me with “how could he help me” and if I wasn’t ordering I needed to leave. There was an asian lady, I didn’t get her name. She tried her best to de-escalate the situation though he kept insisting on going back and forth with me… in front of customers. I’ve never experienced something like this and as a fellow service worker I am completely mind blown at how such an interaction could happen. I took my business elsewhere, down the street to the to 1261 Lexington Ave where I was treated exceptionally and will continue to take my business there from now on. :)
I was in there from around 5-5:20pm on November 11th, he had on a black shirt and I believe he was maybe Hispanic though I could be wrong. Apologizes if I am. I had on green pants and a Yeezy grey...
Read moreWalked here on a freezing cold day last week. Just wanted a coffee and a place to warm up for a few minutes after visiting The Met. We walked in and waited a few minutes to place our order (no one was in front of us - the guy at the register just wasn't paying attention). As we placed our orders, one of the workers told us that the lobby was closing. We were bummed out but figured we had at least a few minutes to sit after getting our coffee so we could order an Uber. There were several people in the lobby, including a large group who were occupying most of the tables. A few minutes after we received our coffee, one of the workers came by and started picking up and stacking the chairs people were not sitting in, and asking people to leave. Mind you, it was 6:05 at this point, and the hours on their door said they did not close until 6:30. We ordered our Uber and stood up to leave, but didn't want to wait outside in the cold for too long so we just stood by the door, so they could still clean up the lobby. A few minutes later, another worker walked up to us showing us the time on his phone (6:11) and said, "Our lobby closed 11 minutes ago, so we really can't have anyone standing around." I was shocked! I think that it was pretty obvious that we were just waiting for our Uber, and we weren't in anyone's way. We were making an effort to leave, but it seemed they wanted us out right that second. Again, they didn't even close until 6:30. I have worked in customer service since I was 16, so I am usually pretty understanding, especially when it comes to closing times/duties. It just seemed unnecessary and rude to kick paying customers out 30 minutes before close, especially when they were making an...
Read moreOn Tuesday March 21st 12:55 pm a young man at the register refused to take my 100$ dollar bill Because “he had no money in his till” and when I examined his body language I asked “are you sure? It seems like you’re uncomfortable” he said “ I couldn’t change it anyway we don’t accept 100$ bills” to which I said “well why didn’t you just say that?”. It makes me wonder if this is actually the policy or if my undone hair and gym clothes (and being black) added to the affect. I purchase Starbucks daily with a card so I can’t say for sure if this was an act of racism but it felt very unwelcoming and cold. If this is not the policy, I would like this event to be fully investigated. I felt humiliated in front of all...
