Enchanting coffee shop. Beautiful ambiance.
I came here yesterday while I was visiting the area, searching for coffee- something distinct, a little fun, curious. Most coffee spots I looked up in the vicinity seemed to blend into one another, except Stumptown, so I decided to give it a try. The store was really stunning upon walking inside, resembling a train station from the 19th century. The vibe was warm, welcoming but quaint and peaceful. Nothing is feeling rushed. The decor was absolutely beautiful, even their merch looked upscale and high end, and something special to Stumptown. There was even a small area to peruse little coffee and espresso gadgets: bialetti, aeropress, etc. which I haven’t seen too frequently before.
Menu states all drinks are made with oat milk unless stated otherwise. I ordered the seasonal sugar & spice latte (iced) which was delicious, creamy, but hits you with an impactful amount of nutmeg. Never tried anything like it before. Caffe mocha tasted a bit just like mocha, however still tasty. For food, I ordered a cheddar and chive scone, an almond croissant, and a ham and Gruyère croissant. The cheddar and chive scone was dense and moist. There was a soft crunch on the exterior and pillowy interior, and it was a sizable scone. It was mild; not too salty nor overpowering. The ham and Gruyère croissant had sesame seeds on the outside which was a nice touch. Upon taking a bite, this croissant blew me away! There’s a million layers that are perfectly buttery, and plenty of ham and Gruyère (both which seem high in quality, and sliced very thickly) swirled through the core. The almond croissant was another visual stunner, another excellent choice. Delicate and crisp with a smooth and creamy almond flavor. All of the croissants in the window looked divine!
I had only wished their variety for drinks, like flavors, toppings, etc. was more clear in their menu. As someone who’s not very familiar with coffee culture it felt a little bit unapproachable. However, the staff was very kind and pleasant and I’m sure could answer any questions one might have!
If I lived in the area, I’d be back to try more. If I find myself in downtown Brooklyn again, I will absolutely return. A nice experience! I think whether you’re looking for a casual, quick coffee, or if you’re very into coffee culture and that’s your hobby, this is a spot you will enjoy. Wonderful spot for...
Read moreI have never received such humiliating treatment by a service industry establishment to the point where I broke into tears and cried before. Hoping to have a relaxing Sunday, I was called a "trespasser" and kicked out from this establishment after I purchased a $6.80 latte "leave right now, right now!! You are trespassing, I need you to just leave". The lady with short hair wearing glasses literally kicked me out on December 13, 2020 afternoon around 2:15PM as I was pausing for 2 minutes at the exit area trying to figure out on Google maps where I could go next after getting some coffee. She came near me twice with such contempt in her eyes and told me 'you are trespassing', and humiliated me in front of everyone, and required my most immediate leave. I am a loyal Stumptown customer for the past 3 years since I moved to NYC area, I even have the Portland mug I bought from Oregon back in February, and I have been taking all of my guests to this place. I am shaking right now as I write this review. I have my mask on and the intermittent area at this location has open doors. The pandemic should be the time to be nice to people, not an excuse to be mean and kick customers out with such demeaning attitude. You could come here thinking you are enjoying your lovely Sunday afternoon, and a barista literally kicking you out from the coffeeshop you just purchased coffee from could make you burst into tears and ruin your day. You have no right to treat me this way, I am not a street drunkard walking inside the coffeeshop to disturb the peace so you can kick me out as if I am one, not a spectacle you can embarrass in front of other people waiting in line, I am a paying customer who purchased a $6.80 latte and I have done nothing wrong to receive this...
