Good food - terrible service in a very noisy environment. Not sure if they recently opened but they need serious work on customer service.
Note: their hours are only on Fridays and Saturdays
Located in the lower level of Hotel Z NYC. On a business trip and not really in the mood for Jamaican food, decided to try this place out.
Walked in at 7:00pm (they open at 6pm) and the place was deserted. 2 chefs behind a bar that seats maybe 10 people and 2 waiters milling about + a young lady (manager?)
Sat at the end of the bar and the menu is pretty small (given their limited hours and working days, I was ok with that). Ordered a Sapporo (bottle) and the "holy grail" (7 piece set).
Side note: they only serve maki-style sushi (the cone shape, handheld sushi).
Music was obnoxiously loud to the point where my Apple watch warned me of the noise level. I asked if they could turn down the volume a bit and was totally ignored
Beer: it's a Sapporo so good holy grail set: VERY good - variety with lots of texture, umami, and well executed. 20% automatic gratuity: it was mentioned on the menu so ok with me
Between 7:15-7:20pm, 3 separate couples walked in and were seated (a few more open seats still there).
At 7:26pm, the chef (who prepared the makis) asked me if I wanted anything else and when I declined, he promptly asked me to leave. Shoved my bill (time mark: 7:26:40pm - took him 40 seconds to print it and put it in front of me) Huh? I was in that seat for less than 30 minutes and just spent $113.41 ($80 for the set, $8 for the beer, $7.81 tax and $17.60 for the auto tip). Seriously bro? He was not subtle about it either - basically it was "if you're done, we'd like to ask you to leave"
Was the food worth the price? you can only decide (basically 1 handheld maki at about $14 per [including tax and tip) - personally, I enjoyed it BUT I will never EVER go back - I am happy to take my money elsewhere. My guess is that I do not fit their "typical" customer profile. IF that's the case, then tell me up front and I would have taken my...
Read moreSushi Saint is the newest, must-visit handroll spot in Long Island City, offering an intimate 10-seat sushi counter experience by Michelin Star Chef Michael Collantes.
We tried the Ave Maria 5 Set ($55) and loved each handroll: • Bluefin Tuna (akami) with black garlic – My favorite! The black garlic sauce was an umami bomb—rich, caramelized, slightly sweet, and tangy. I’ve had black garlic in Asia, but this was my first time finding it in the States! • King Salmon with lime miso, pickled jalapeño, and microgreens – Bright and balanced with just a hint of heat. • Crab with miso brown butter and cucumber – Buttery and delicate. • Truffle Mushroom Jam – Earthy, umami-packed, and unique. • Scallop with brown butter and cucumber – Sweet and creamy perfection.
We also couldn’t resist a few a la carte handrolls: • Negi Toro with fresh wasabi – Fatty and fresh. • A5 Wagyu with fresh wasabi and mushroom jam – Luxuriously melt-in-your-mouth. • Ikura Salmon Roe with yuzu soy and shiso – Bursting with citrusy, briny goodness.
The restaurant is beautifully decorated with neon accents and Sakura flowers, creating a stylish yet cozy vibe. The service was friendly and attentive, making for a...
Read moreAbsolutely horrific. This place needs to be shut down more or less immediately.
A single server is also the only cook. Rolls are assembled from room temperature bins where everything is pre-prepped...except they immediately ran out of ingredients for some rolls.
Cleaning chemicals were in the open, uncovered, next to the food preperation.
The single server would occasionally disappear to who knows where. He was making the food, concurrently, for the entire bar. There were 7 people, which meant that to get your next roll, you had to wait for him to make 6 other rolls for other people.
No hairnet, gloves not sterile. Smelled like cigarette smoke and the napkins had clearly not been laundered correctly.
It's in the basement of a defunct hotel? Random people (and animals) frequently interrupt the "atmosphere" by going to other businesses.
Drinks took 30 minutes to arrive...and were wrong. Never got our replacements.
After all this we're given the wrong check. By time we escape, the server has the gall to include a non-negotiable 20% gratuity. Will be disputing the charge.
Avoid this unless you are a public health or zoning authority, in which case make haste toward your civic...
