In deciding to test this place out or go to a known pho spot we decided to test this out..big disappointment.
First off the place was a sweatbox. Seems they have no ventilation and hot as hell. The employees were behind the buffet literally sweating. As was I by the time the food was paid for. If there had been a wait we would have left at that point but there is no wait. The food is there steaming, keeping the sweatbox hot. My next complaint would be that they do not have water. What type of "restaurant" if this ace fits that classification does not offer water?
As for the food we ordered two combination plates. As for the price on these: 9.99 for the vegetable 10.95 for the meat and veg, and 11.95 for the seafood (if memory recalls). For the neighborhood..not so bad! They do keep it very light on whatever meat you order.
We ordered two. The first was trash and the second was good but does not compare well to other Indian spots. #1 Masala Chicken (worst ever) , peas w/cheese, and basmati rice with lentils. #2 Lamb, Okra, and basmati rice with lentils. This...
Read moreJust got to NYC for the first time and needed some comfort food. So I turned to my go-to, Indian. The hotel front-desk kept trying to send me to upscale places. Needless to say, I don't care for high-class in my blue jeans and Indian that breaks the bank. Google pointed me to Swagat on 29th Street and wow! They were great. I got there on a Sunday evening expecting crowds, only to have the place to myself. I ordered my usual test options to see how good of a place this is. (Veggie Samosas [caution, these are spicy], Chicken Korma, and Garlic Naan) It was pretty hard to beat what they served me. It was fresh, and super quick. (Under 5 minutes...probably because it wasn't rush hour) The place did fill in eventually and everyone seemed pleased with their food. One suggestion for first-timers. I'm a fan of spice, but usually go for a medium at a new place to test the waters. If I would order this meal again, I'd go for spicy. I'd totally go back...and I may just do that before I depart. No need to break the bank at the high-end places, stop into Swagat for...
Read moreI had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately, it was another letdown. I ordered the Dal Makhni and roti, expecting a comforting and flavorful meal, but what I received was far from satisfying.
The Dal Makhni lacked depth and richness—it tasted watery and underseasoned, almost as if it had been rushed or diluted. There was none of that slow-cooked, creamy texture or the balanced spices that define a good Dal Makhni. It felt more like a generic lentil soup than the iconic North Indian dish it’s meant to be.
The roti was equally disappointing—dry, hard, and clearly not freshly made. Instead of being soft and warm, it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while or reheated without care.
Overall, the meal lacked both authenticity and quality. With so many excellent Indian restaurants in New York, I wouldn’t recommend this one. It doesn’t do justice to the rich and flavorful traditions of...
