It so happened that I've just gotten back from Mexico the week before so I had a fresh palate to compare Tacombi's tacos to. Well, they taste just like they do in Mejico!
No water-down "Americanized" or Tex-mex here. Every ingredient adds flavor. Their tortillas are made of flavorful corn (not flavorless flour that just holds things together), their meats are deliciously seasoned and juicy (they don't rely on cheeses and salty greasy rice to get flavor), and their home-made salsas for the tacos go so well with the specific meat.
My favorites? Baja Fish. The batter is light and crispy, and the cabbage and sauce make it a party flavor. A close second are the Sinaloa Shrimp and the Beef Birria (the consome is delicious).
Since I don't live far, I've started to be a regular with my buds for 2 for 1 Taco Tuesdays. We love that we don't have to wait to get seated, that the atmosphere is simple and casual, but more importantly, the service is friendly (thank you Deandra!) and quick!
My wife also likes this place but, because she's vegetarian, there's only one type of taco (Black Bean & Sweet Potato) and one tostada (Avocado Tostada) that she can pick from. She loves those though!
My only recommendation to Tacombi is to switch to corn on the cob for the street corn and to pleeez add Carnitas, another vegetarian choice (maybe re-fried beans and Nopal, or with Jackfruit [Yaka]) and, since it's roots are from Yucatan, why not Cochinita Pibil?
All-in-all, not just one of my favorite spots in Forest Hills but...
Read moreI saw this place on Austin and wanted to try it came in and a waitress approached me asked if I wanted to seat inside or out I told her inside as I like the way it was set, the place I asked her for opinion on the tacos and she told me witch once were the best Choice. Before all that I entered and witnessed more employees than patrons dining. This is Forest Hills and a beautiful afternoon so no reason why it would be so empty but I went against my better judgment and decided to give it a go I wasted money on Beef taco and one chicken taco came out to 23$ . Did I mention the tacos were barely warm at $5.00 one and Beef tacos were 13$, also the Service was very bad she gave me my Taco, and left, I also noticed the meat that spins was very dry looking and burned, also the guys that work on the grill one of them was eating on he’s work time the other guy that prepare the tacos with he’s bare hands grabbed meat and put it in his mouth while he’s fingers go in he’s mouth he’s also preparing tacos for customers. Without cleaning he’s hands that’s what I noticed, while I was done with my food the waitress that served me didn’t even come to ask if I need anything, she gave my food left and didn’t see her again. I wanted for her to come as me if all ok so I can tell her give me my check I ended up walking to her at the bar where she was standing with a few others waitress eating at the bar I came to her and told her how much I owe u and payed, I will never go back again it’s not worth the money for what u get and the...
Read moreI’ve been keeping an eye on Tacombi for a while ever since they first started construction earlier this year. I’ve been to the UWS location and have enjoyed their food so it’s nice to see another location open in Forest Hills. They are finally open for business but only takeout and delivery right now. Apparently, they are still waiting on some licenses before they can fully open for indoor dining.
Visitors are giving a paper menu were you checkoff off items you want to order. I ordered two Baja Crispy Fish tacos ($6.50 each), one Avocado Tostada ($4.50) and one Gallo Quesadilla ($9). The food was quickly made and packaged. The whole transaction only took about ten minutes; super-efficient!
The tacos were good but not spectacular. One of my favorite things to eat is Baja style fish tacos and the ones here were really good. The fish was very tasty, light and had a nice flaky texture. Unfortunately, they were also quite small. The Avocado Tostada also was very tasty. It had avocado spread, refried beans topped with queso fresco and pickled cabbage. All the ingredients tasted fresh and worked well together but again, the serving was so small. The Gallo Quesadilla was nice light dish. I liked the lightly crisped tortilla and melted cheese. It was even better topped with the dried chile salsa it came with.
Overall, I was happy with the food, but I must point out, I was still slightly hungry afterwards. The prices are definitely on the higher end so I probably would only come here if I was in the...
