First the side going back towards Jamaica is literally crumbling and has sheets of plywood covering cracks. The other side going towards Manhattan has a rest area which is decent except it is often closed in the afternoon when it can be significantly colder and you want to wait I'm a heated area. If you unfortunately have to use the restroom it worse than a remote neglected gas station rest stop. At least they have a relatively functional door. The wood door is cracked and you can even see through it so proceed with caution. This door won't survive a hit or offer much safety. The bathroom is missing the exhaust fan cover it appears and the bathroom toilet paper holder had been broken for months if not longer as that was the first time I went to wash my hands and saw the deplorable conditions. Whoever is responsible for this location should be severely reprimanded with docked pay or terminated immediately. Read moreOne of the most beautiful train stations in New York City. Extremely easy to get to and from Manhattan via the Long Island Rail Road with just 1 or 2 stops to/from either Grand Central Terminal (Madison Concourse) or Penn Station in about 15 minutes, depending on the train.
When you exit the station into Station Square (if arriving from Manhattan), the view of the square, the architecture, and the sky all around is truly charming. The Tudor Revival architecture, along with other elements of the English Renaissance, is designed to resemble a medieval village square, and it incorporates features like gables, dormer windows, arcades, and wrought-iron lanterns to create a charming and picturesque atmosphere.
The station itself always feels very safe and relatively clean. I am not a commuter so I cannot speak to the commute crowd, but the station is usually not very crowded during most hours aside from concert nights at Forest...
