BLOWOUT GONE TERRIBLY WRONG BY THE HANDS OF LAZY STAFF.
Needed to get my hair curled in a vintage wave for my baby shower the day off and everything went wrong here:
1st- I arrive there with my hair semi permanently dyed to a pink color (for my baby shower) and I had told the girl working on my hair that when she washes my hair she needs to skip the shampooing part and just wash with conditioner instead or else the color would fade very heavily and I had clip in hair extensions to match. So what happened? She ended up shampooing my hair after she said she understood!
2nd disaster- when she was done blow drying my hair to get it ready for the curling process I noticed that it’s far too light now and that it did not match the hair extensions so I had asked her to wash the hair extensions to fade that color down to match...Big surprise!! She was surprised to find out that she had to put the clip in hair extensions on for the look (after I had Came into the salon with them on initially and she saw me take them off) like duh! Of course I want them back on! But now I wasn’t sure if she tried to get out of using the hair extensions or she really didn’t know how to put them on because her response was “well I don’t know how to put those on”...ummm they’re clip ins! That’s basically like saying that you don’t know how to put Bobby pins in hair! And then she preceded to add that “well I also don’t have time”. You’ve got to be kidding me I thought! So which one is it, you don’t have time or you don’t know how to put it on??
3rd issue- so I finally got her to wash the hair and dry them, as she took my hair extensions towards the bowl I heard her snicker behind her breath. I mean complete arrogance and laziness coming out of the dressers at this salon! What am I paying you for??
4th problem- I ended up having to put my own hair extensions back on because apparently no one else in the salon knows how to!
5th major issue- I had originally showed her what type of style I wanted for my hair in a pic and I didn’t even get anything close to that! All I got was a bunch of foofy curls! I was pissed! And then I said “well okay how do we get it to be more like this” and she says “you can’t do that with your hair”...oh really? That’s funny seeing as I went to a hole in the wall a few days previously to test the look out and they were able to accomplish the style without hesitation or complaint but you’re saying it’s impossible???
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SALON TO ANY FEMALE especially one who is looking to get her hair blow dryed and styled for a special occasion because they will rip you off and you’ll end up crying because you won’t get what you asked for. The STAFF ARE PURE LAZY AND...
Read moreTokuyama Salon UPPER EAST SIDE//////Appalling Haircut and Terrible Service at Tokuyama Salon (Upper East Side) - A Cautionary Tale I am writing this review with immense disappointment and frustration after a truly disastrous experience at Tokuyama Salon. Despite glowing Yelp reviews and specific recommendations for "Yoshi, the director," especially for short hair and bob styles, my visit resulted in my hair being utterly ruined.
I specifically called the salon beforehand to confirm Yoshi's expertise with various short styles for women, and was assured he was "very good." This was, tragically, a complete lie.
I had a beautiful, carefully grown-out short haircut from Vidal Sassoon London just six months ago, and I was incredibly particular about what I wanted. I clearly communicated my desired style, emphasizing that I wanted softness and texture, and explicitly stated "no razor on my back." Despite my precise instructions and even showing pictures, Yoshi cut my hair with a razor without asking, completely disregarding my wishes.
The result is a grotesque, uneven mess – a "big ball on top of my head" that forces me to wear a hat constantly. I cannot even begin to describe how bad it is. It's so badly cut that multiple other professional salons I've since visited have refused to attempt to fix it, stating it's too short and too damaged.
Yoshi ended up not charging me, but that is irrelevant; the damage to my hair is far more significant than any monetary cost. My hair was partially long, and he confidently claimed to "know everything," yet he clearly did not comprehend my simple instructions.
To make matters worse, when I called the salon days later hoping a superior or manager could help fix this disaster, I was promised a call back. No one ever called. The complete lack of customer service and responsibility after such a severe error is astounding.
I would strongly advise anyone considering Tokuyama Salon, especially for short haircuts or bobs, to exercise extreme caution. Do not be swayed by the positive reviews, as my experience, and that of my friend who also had her hair severely messed up by Yoshi, paints a very different picture. My friend's honest review was even unfairly flagged by Yelp, which is completely unacceptable for a truly miserable haircut I witnessed myself.
I am left devastated and actively searching for someone, anyone, who can help mitigate this catastrophic haircut. It's heartbreaking to have such a beautiful cut destroyed and be left with...
Read moreI am so disappointed in this salon (coloring service and customer service). I have been there four or five times, and was planning to make it my regular. Sadly, they have lost a good customer.
I have had no problem with their haircuts. The stylists who have cut my and my daughter's hair have been wonderful.
Issue: I chose Tokuyama for my first-time salon color experience because of my positive experiences before. I was charged $100 + tip for just a touch up covering grays, and 16 days in - I am already showing so much white. Basically, I have the same color results I get after doing it myself, but at a price tag of $100. I decided to go in today and ask to speak to a manager.
The receptionist said there was no manager. When I asked to speak to the most senior person, she said no one was available. After listening to my concern and speaking to another colorist, I was told they had a 14 day policy for a fix. I had no idea! Why didn't the colorist talk to me about that? This was my first time.
The receptionist did nothing to alleviate my disappointment. I had an expectation of looking nice and was so excited for my first coloring appointment. No empathy at all.
For a place that is in the business of helping people look and feel good, they sure failed miserably. Especially disappointing since I respect the Japanese culture so much and was looking forward to being their longtime client.
I live on the UES and there is a lot of choice. Readers, if you are booking a coloring appointment, make sure to ask a lot...
