Where The Industry Eats - @vicsnewyork a favorite of @ivodiaznyc from @casaoranyc Having both worked in the hospitality industry for most of our lives, we know there’s no better way to find out where to eat than from chefs, servers, bartenders and restauranteurs, so we started this series to highlight the places they’d recommend. 📍 Vic’s, 31 Great Jones St, NoHo #nightoff #industryeats #chefschoice #nyceats #nycgems

WOW. Where to start with Vic's? This place is a hidden gem among the city's Italian restaurants. The whipped pecorino antipasto with the pizza bianca is to die for. We devoured it. I've never tasted plain pizza dough so good, and I have never had an aged authentic cheese whipped as a dip. The two together were something special. The two pastas we had were even better. My rigatoni were phenomenal. Perfectly al dente and enormous, they were clearly handmade. The thick tomato-based sauce they were in was not overwhelming, but it complimented the guanciale--which was cooked perfectly with a chewy but firm and almost crisp texture. The onions, cut in wide leaflets, shared this texture. I cannot get over not only how good this dish tasted, but how good it felt to chew. The borsa or "little purses" were fantastic as well. Again perfectly al dente, but as a filled pasta it's rare to get that right. The ricotta inside was delicious. The hazelnuts were a flavorful touch, and their light cream sauce complimented them perfectly. One other thing, the contorno, brussels sprouts charred and flayed with a lemon I assume aioli sauce, were nothing short of the best vegetables I've ever eaten that weren't deep-fried zucchini on the streets of Napoli. Kudos there. I came with my mother and grandmother at dinnertime on a weeknight and there were few people there. It picked up by the time we ate and left, so it seems their stylish bar is quite popular. The place was immaculately decorated for Christmas with string lights and a subtle wreath or two.

On a impromptu visit to NYC my kids and I were exploring the area of our hotel looking for food. After days of eating nothing but burgers and fried foods I demanded a place where I could get a good meal! The smiles coming from the host stand made me want to check out the menu. Everyone was so welcoming. We would actually pass this place up because my picky eater needed French fries! After negotiations with the picky one she agreed to try the pizza if I’d take her else wear for fries later. I happily go back and grab a table for 4. While keeping an eye on my 3 kids and the sky for the impending thunderstorm I scan the menu. I’d checked Instagram and saw some beautiful Yukon gold potatoes I had to try. The waitress tells me they’re not on the dinner menu but she’ll see what she can do. I place our order and she comes back to say they can do the potatoes. We got the chicken (amazing) Cheese pizza with pepperoni (suggested by the serve to avoid the chilies on the regular pepperoni that may be too spicy for the little ones) Butter pasta, and Cacioepepe (didn’t get to try but looked and smelled amazing) Really everything looked and smelled amazing! One little snag was rectified immediately and didn’t spoil the experience at all. I’m currently trying to figure out how I can go back for dinner before we head home!

Our party had a reservation at 8pm but had a long day of shopping and knew we would be in a rush by 5pm. We called, and they were able to accommodate pushing our reservation to 8:30, which was great.

We got there a bit late, at 8:40, and one of our friends was already sat at one of the tables at the front of the restaurant. The front of the restaurant by the bar is a bit separated from the rest of the dining room and close to the front door, so we had asked to be moved to the main dining room. Our hostess said to give them a few minutes.

Then one of the other hostesses came by and without a word started picking up our menus. Then we asked should we grab our glasses or anything else? She turned around and shook her finger at us then started walking away. We realized she expected us to follow her to another table, so we got up and followed her to another table and without a word she put our menus down. Just overall a bit of a weird experience and felt like she was super annoyed at us for asking to move when they were not busy in the slightest bit lol.

Food was fine, nothing to rave about & server was knowledgeable about GF options, which one of our guests required. The server came by significantly less than another table right next to us (we thought they might know the owner?) and we had to wave her down a few times. Not impressed by our first experience, and there’s plenty of better Italian spots in the area with...
