Tried Outlaws last summer and the experience wasnt great. After hearing from friends at the holidays that things had improved, my wife and I decided to have a quick dinner there last night.
We sat at the bar, and it wasn't overly busy (which I thought was odd given it was 530pm on a Saturday).
Sat down and our bartender was prompt and pleasant. Beer menu was outdated and first beer ordered was no longer on tap. Second beer recommended was spot on and a good alternative to the missing menu item.
Ordered 2 beers, the fried pickles appetizer, 2 sandwiches (bandit burger w/fries and tenderloin with Mac and cheese).
Our pickle appetizer was exactly 12 pickles slices (think hamburger pickle chips dipped in heavy breading) for $10. They had good flavor, but this appetizer was worth $7-8 tops, and even then should have been twice the size to be competitive with other similar establishments fried pickles appetizers. This was less than most would expect to get as a substitute side with their meal.
Sandwiches arrived a short time later, no issues with speed of service. During the order process we had asked for a side of Mayo and Ranch. We received a side of ranch and... Butter. A cold scoop of butter. The ranch, while flavorful, was thin like water vs dressing/ dipping consistency.
The burger temp was correct, but upon first bite it appears obvious this is a frozen patty, over seasoned on the grill. For a place that is burger focused (it's in the name) the burgers should shine. It did not. It was overly seasoned, and the patty was dramatically smaller than the bread it was wrapped in. It was like a grilled cheese with a small patty inside it. Bread was also a Texas toast sized slice, so with two Texas toast slices and a small patty, the thickness of the sandwich was a bit of overkill in the wrong way, with 75% bread vs 25% burger thickness.
The tenderloin was as expected for Indiana, oversized and breaded. The breading was heavily seasoned, and no issues other than the heavy seasoning. Nothing special that made it stand out either. Sides were good and hot.
Through the meal, the bartender continued to check on us, but never offered a refill for our waters, or cleared any dishes. Our water glasses and beer glasses sat empty from the time we finished our appetizer until we left, and while she continued to ask if we needed anything and we're doing good, she never proactively did the things that should be the basis for service work: keeping drinks filled and dining area cleared of clutter and finished dishes.
This also occured on our first visit, where by the end of the meal we just had a giant stack of empty plates and glasses on our table, a collection of everything brought out during our meal period. Maybe this is their service style, but I would be surprised if that were the case, and would strongly consider changing that if it is..
At the end of the meal, we received the bill. For 2 pints, a small appetizer and 2 sandwiches, the bill came to... $67! Wow.
The beers were great, but the food, portions, and quality of service was much closer to a $40 experience. There was nothing remarkable about eating here, which should be the case if you are spending nearly $70 for what is essentially a lunch order for 2.
Lastly, I'm all for suggested gratuity on a receipt (as someone who spent a large amount of time working as a bartender, server, manager and hospitality consultant, I have zero problems with tipping culture and automatically leave 20% as a standard). They have the suggested gratuity listed to start at 22% and it went up to nearly 30%. This is just insanely silly.
While it might be a nice gesture to the service staff to put it in the point of service at 22% as the suggestion, is likely a negative for guests when they get their bill, especially when they may feel (based on other reviews) the price vs experience may have been lacking.
Overall, Outlaw offers nothing memorable that separates itself from a number of similar restaurants, other than being much more expensive for a very "meh" experience. Won't...
Read moreThe bad - My parents made a reservation for 20 people this evening at 5. (February 18)
They were told they would have 2 big tables together, amongst arriving they were told they didn’t have those tables available and we couldn’t arrange the ones given to us.
The female server Alex T. was incredibly rude. When my father asked her what happened with the 20 seats she said “ is this not 20” in fact no, it was 18. She continued to try to say everyone who was paying together had to sit together because they had two servers for us and couldn’t split the tables ? We have never heard of bills not being allowed to be split, and never had this issue anywhere else.
Later the female waitress( Alex T) came to me and said “UM I can’t get through here” and I said well we weren’t seated right and this is where we had to move so everyone could sit at the table.. and she continued to RUN into the chair I was sitting in multiple times to the point my father had to get up and switch me seats because she would not stop. (Unfortunately as he was trying to mingle with his friends and wife but the waitress would not stop running into me while I was sitting there) Another waiter walked through that same area later and literally ran into the person sitting next to us at a table and she got up and moved to a different seat. Our party table that had the female server, made several comments about the waitress being rude and asked us “was your waiter good at least?” She did not ring up or bring out any of the appetizers they ordered.
After my father moved seats to end the issue the female waitress continued to slam chairs to get around instead of simply walking the other way.
This would not have been a problem if we were given the setup we were told to expect, and even that was fine we made it work but for the waitress ( Alex) to act like a child and also make rude comments to CUSTOMERS about the seating being inconvenient is absolutely flabbergasting. It was completely unacceptable and embarrassing to my parents anniversary party that they had to apologize about Alex T’s behavior and lack of good service.
the most confusing part is that when my parents checked in they said they had gotten manager approval for the party reservation so we were really unsatisfied that they would not accommodate to our large party. When the tables became an issue for Alex I’m not sure why she didn’t do her best to accommodate to a reservation we made prior to showing up, or why she didn’t at least ask a manager to help her if she didn’t have those skills.
Managers- Needless to say Alex T. Should not be given a 10 top as she could not handle it.
The GOOD Christopher R. Was an amazing waiter and took great care of our half of the party table. Polite and took requests without offense, very professional and also outgoing! There were a few mishaps but he took care of them swiftly and without bad taste. Food was good!
In short I would advise to AVOID this place if you have an important reservation. And avoid Alex T. As a waitress unless you want to be physically slammed into and given attitude. Save your party the...
Read moreWe decided to try this place to celebrate my mother’s 70th birthday. We made a reservation, although we didn’t need one. When we arrived we were kindly greeted and quickly shown to our table. Our server was quick to take our drink orders, and quick to deliver them. She gave us adequate time to select from the menu before coming back. After we placed our order our appetizer came quickly after, quickly followed by our soups, then eventually our entrees. After our soups came out we had to ask the runner for drink refills as our server had yet to come back.
My two toddlers ordered macaroni and cheese, one with French fries, the other with tater tots. Neither of my kids would eat the macaroni. The traditional wing appetizer that we ordered had good flavor, but the meat was dry. The celery that accompanied the wings was flimsy, and the ranch was watery. My mother ordered the pork chop with broccoli and chili, overall she was satisfied with her meal but noted that the chili was sweet. My wife got the steak tacos, with the steak to be cooked medium rare (the chopped steak was cooked throughout), she didn’t mention how she liked her food but she did say that she wouldn’t like to go back. I ordered the whitefish with coleslaw and chili. I took two bites total of the chili and couldn’t eat anymore as it was too sweet. I next tried the coleslaw and all of the vegetables were wilted and the flavor was too sweet as well so I only ate two bites of the coleslaw too. I ate one of the two whitefish filets and it was good: flavor wise nothing special, but cooked to the perfect temperature. I took one bite of the second filet and tried to swallow it, but it was way too fishy and I had to spit it out into my napkin. Eventually our server came back and asked if I would like a box for my fish filet. I declined and brought to her attention that the second filet was too fishy to eat. She did bring it to the manager’s attention.
When our server brought us the bill she mentioned that the manager took 10% off the bill due to my second fish filet being too fishy. I was taken aback that my order wasn’t taken off the bill, so I looked over the rest of the bill to check for accuracy. I was shocked to see that we were charged extra for my child’s tater tots. Nowhere on the menu does it say that tater tots are an extra fee for kids meals. We were also charged an additional $2 each for our two sugary chili’s, but this was listed on the menu so I was expecting that fee. There was at least half of the ordered food that wasn’t eaten due to taste, not...
