I kept hearing about this place and was intrigued by the small menu. To me, this indicates they choose a few things and do them extraordinarily well. It finally popped up as available on Uber Eats, so we jumped at the chance to give it a try.
Unfortunately fried food does not travel well. I feel like this would likely be a 5 star review had we been there to enjoy our meals on site. Fresh out of the kitchen, still sizzling is the way to eat fried foods. The sides of fries, fried pickles, and fried pickled green tomatoes definitely suffered some loss of quality in transit. Still, the tomatoes in particular were delicious. Sliced thick enough to stand, tangy and tart, they are a star side. I will always get them. The fried pickles were better than many places', and the presumably housemade Ranch was surprisingly good. I usually poo-pooh Ranch but this was pretty yummy. Whatever the sauce was for the tomatoes was tasty too, but they were so good they stood alone. That sauce was not suited to the pickles, interestingly.
The chicken sandwich is what this place is famous for, and it delivers. Bye bye Popeye's, you're dethroned. This big giant chicken breast with delectable seasoned breading fried crisp is the champ of chicken sandwiches. The buns were fresh and soft, and however you dress it up you're gonna have a good time. Grab extra napkins, these puppies are juicy!
I got the Chicken "Not-so-Waffle" with Bacon Jam, Maple Syrup, Pimiento Cheese, and Tomato. Next time I will lose the wholly unnecessary and somewhat confusing tomato and maybe add bacon because I am a glutton. The flavor profile was totally perfect except the distracting tomato. I am definitely coming back for a second swing at this one.
Hubby made his own fried Chicken sandwich because he hates everything I love in food. His creation featured Swiss, Bibb lettuce, tomato, and spicy mayo. He thought it was great. They have many more exciting options if you are more like me than my husband LOL While the menu seems small, the possibilities...
Read moreSo to start, I love the Boxcar Betty's location in West Ashley and love their sandwiches and fries. So my review has nothing to do with the food.
When entering, I really liked the layout of the North Charleston location. It was a huge improvement on the one that was in Summerville that has since closed. It looked comfortable, not too cafeteria like and plenty of seating.
Her is where it went sideways - even though there were only a couple tables seated, most of the tables were dirty and needed to be wiped down. There were several people working behind the counter so it was not due to lack of staff. During out time there, no one ever came out to wipe off any of the tables which was around 30 minutes or so.
The guy taking the orders mumbled and I could barely hear him let alone understand him. Someone taking orders and working a counter should be someone that people can interact with clearly.
Lastly, it asked me for a tip when I paid in amounts of 25%, 20% and 18% or I could do a custom tip or select no tip. I am a tipper and worked in restaurants for 15 years so I have no problems with tipping but I felt that A. the % was too high when no one is really waiting on you and B. they clearly (see note on dirty tables) doing anything to get a tip. In all reality they did no more than what I would get at a McDonalds or other fast food as far as wait on me, and at those places I am not asked to tip. So if asking for tips, the workers should be waiting on the customers or the tips should be removed or dropped to a more...
Read moreThis is a South Carolina chain restaurant that serves chicken sandwiches. Personally this place would be considered a Five Guys and Chick Fil-A would be In-N-Out. I make this comparison because here you get the option to really customize your meals with are a lot more topping and sauce options.
The dining area is nothing to be amazed and just looks like it’s missing something in their wall decor with all the blank space on the chalk board. I came in for lunch on a weekday and they were already sold out of grilled chicken, which is fine since I prefer crispy chicken.
I ended up ordering the box car crispy chicken sandwich with added Swiss cheese and a order of sweet potato fries. The sandwich was tasty but a lot of the crisp was not there. I would say more than half of crispy chicken was soggy breading.
I would not recommend the sweet potato fries unless you’re expecting a dessert since it is really sweet. I enjoyed it but it didn’t really go well with eating it with my sandwich.
I would come back if friends or coworkers picked to come here but I personally would not come...
