Hey fellow Googlers!
China Star is far enough from the strip to be a locals spot and is in an area of Craig Rd surrounded by "big box" stores. Why is that an important thing? It means there's a larger turnover of customers and the food never just sits and boils to death.
Food: They have a great selection of seafood if that's your thing. However, I was very surprised by the beef. It wasn't stringy or gristly. Just decent cuts. Same with the chicken! Good and fresh veggies rounded everything out. On a side note, I'd pass on the lomein.
Allergies: If you have a shellfish allergy, the seafood is NOT separated from the other foods on their own buffet warmers. Shrimp, crab, crawfish, etc are intermingled between chicken or beef dishes. It means it's very easy that someone could switch tongs or splash allergens thus contaminating other normally safe foods. The spring rolls, egg rolls, Shu Mai, Rangoon, etc. are not marked for contents and only listed as "spring roll", "egg roll", Just be careful.
Atmosphere: I wouldn't call this a destination restaurant, but it's not meant to be. I can appreciate that they concern themselves with food quality first. However, maybe replacing the MANY heavily stained ceiling tiles would be a good thing. After being in the food service game myself, it's one of the first things I see and made me wonder if I made a bad choice.
The air is also a little heavy from the steam buffet warmers. They're cranked up to 11 and steam is pouring past the chaffing trays. When you walk in, you'll be taken by surprise. It's not sauna heavy; more like Florida in the spring heavy. The humidity was actually kinda comfortable but, it's also winter. I can't imagine what it's like in the summer.
Decor is sparce. That's ok. You're not coming to The Chinese Theater in LA or a big corporate casino. It's just well placed and purposeful. I have zero complaints.
Service: Everyone was super friendly. None of the grouchy owners who seem to wait to push you out for being there too long or eating too much were there. Their happiness and friendliness really added to the relaxed atmosphere.
TLDR: Great little local spot that isn't super expensive, has good food, and scratches that Chinese Buffet itch. You won't be...
Read moreThis Chinese buffet place has the WORST Customer Service.! My friend and I are still eating at the booth located on the farther side of the restaurant...and we were only there for at least 45 minutes.. We are BOTH HANDICAP SENIORS SO WE MOVE SLOW WHEN WE WALK TO GET OUR FOOD.. WHILE WE WERE STILL EATING THE SERVER ALREADY GAVE US OUR BILL AND HE TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS IN OUR AREA...!!
THIS MADE OUR BOOTH AREA DARK WHILE WE WERE EATING...
I LOOKED AROUND AND I NOTICED THAT WE ARE THE ONLY CUSTOMER ON THAT SIDE BUT THERE ARE STILL MANY CUSTOMERS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RESTAURANT CLOSE TO THE ENTRANCE.
THINKING THAT THIS SERVER WAS REALLY RUSHING US TO FINISH EATING MADE ME SOOO UPSET AND I FELT INSULTED! I DID NOT SAY ANYTHING BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT TO CREATE A SCENE WHEN I GET ANGRY...
I ALSO WANT TO MENTION THAT SOME OF THE FOOD THEY SERVE HERE ARE OLD MAYBE FROM THE DAY BEFORE THAT THEY ONLY REHEATED AND SERVE THE NEXT DAY.
THIS IS THE WORST INSULTING EXPERIENCE I EVER HAD..! I HOPE ANYONE WHO READ MY COMMENT HERE SHOULD WATCH WHAT THEY ARE EATING...WHEN THEY HAPPEN TO EAT AT THIS CHINA STAR IN CRAIG ROAD..
WATCH OUT FOR THE CHICKEN BARBECUE & STEAMED FISH..IT LOOKS SO BROWN AND IT MIGHT ALREADY BE REHEATED FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS.. THE CHICKEN IS SO HARD AND RUBBERY..MAYBE ALSO REHEATED FOR 2-3 DAYS..?
I'VE BEEN HERE ONLY THIS ONCE & I AM A CHEF SO I KNOW IF THE FOOD IS...
Read moreI wanted to say something nice about this place but... So, the entrance is cramped and it looks sloppy and dinghy. There's just no other way to put it. Bad sign but I was there for the food so I ignored the 1st RED FLAG. Our table was equally as dinghy looking. I'm sure it had been cleaned, it just looked over-used and worn. So let's get to the food. The reports that the food is cold are all true. Cold Tasteless Unidentifiable in some instances Bland Slopped together with cream sauce thrown on it Unappealing Unappetizing Oh good grief, just don't do it to yourself. $17.99 is way too much to be fed pig slop. Our waitress was so nice that I really hate to give a bad review but... UGH! DON'T DO IT!!! I just can't describe how gross and disgusting this place is! The Pepsi was tasty! Okay, that's a plus. Uhm... Oh! Garlic green beans! 6 out of 9 were good! Three of the beans were old and looked rotten. Let's see... Uhm... Oh! The fortune cookies included with the bill were amusing! I'm sorry. I just can't think of anything else good about this...
