There is something magical, nay, mystical that happens when you enter Groovy's. You must pay a $9 cover to experience this catastrophe and it is completely worth it. At least once.
The place is about the size of four shoe boxes, so there might be a line to get in. While in line, you will begin to get a taste of what is waiting beyond the front doors when you see who else is waiting to get in: 50 year old secretaries. 20 something dudes looking to hit on 50 year old secretaries. A bachelorette party. Rednecks. Girls that are way too hot to be going in. A guy from Ohio.
This club is smoky. Both with cigarettes and an obnoxious amount of SFX smoke that pours on the dance floor. The dance floor is a drink free and cigarette free zone. There are large bouncers that will politely remind you to get off the floor with your drink. The dance floor is usually packed and everyone is having fun. I later realized that some of the smoke was coming from the people that were rubbing their groins together. Paper glitter will randomly fall on to the dance floor. People think this is awesome. Later, drunk people will pick up the stuff from the floor and throw it back up in the air and it will land in your drink, but you won't care because you are really drunk.
The music is a collection of hits from the 70s, 80s, 90s and a sprinkling of recent hits. Even your clumsy friends will be able to dance to this music. For some reason, there is a break of silence for about 4 - 10 seconds between each song. It was annoying, but it seemed to help clear the dance floor off between songs.
The bar has three convenient locations to get drinks at. Sadly, the fence around the dance floor squeezes in the egress and makes it difficult to go back and forth. The bartenders are usually making Screaming Orgasms or Buttery Nipples or the other shots that people think are cute and order at this type of establishment. Still, the line moves quickly. Beers were around $3 and my Captain and Cokes were $6.
The reason you want to go to this bar is to watch the other people that are going to this bar. There is a cast of characters that I assume are paid to hang out and dance. They have to be actors because there are not real people like this in the world, right? The old man in a Disco Army uniform. Girl with Mohawk like De Niro from Taxi Driver. The guy in his 50s that looks like an adult Greg Brady and wears sunglasses and a suit. The woman with outrageously large breasts and a shirt cut down to her belly button. You will be unable to turn your eyes away from this moving cataclysm of flesh.
The place opens at 9:00pm. I arrived at 10:00pm and it was crowded. I spent three hours people watching and wasn't bored for an instant. I do not think I will ever return to Groovy's as is was loud and crowded and smoky. But I think if you can cough up $9, you should at least go once. I went alone and had a blast. You go there with a few friends and you will definitely have fun. And if you are lucky, the 50s Greg Brady might take off his suit jacket, unbutton his shirt and dance with you all night long. Who knows... maybe you will become one of...
Read moreWhile over the years I have had enjoyable times and in the past had found the club open to different people and lifestyles. Tonite I was denied entry by a very unsavory security person who said as a man I was not allowed into the club with open toed shoes. While I was being denied entry for sandles that I wear 24/7365. I have heavy work boots and lace up uniform boots and a single pair of leather lace up dress shoes. I wear sandles in freezing weather with snow on the ground. I do not even own closed toe shoes other than work boots.
As I was denied entry several women we allowed into the club with open toes and one was even in flip flops. They were allowed in but as a man I was discriminated against. I specifically asked the security person if I was transgenic and showed up in a dress and open toe heals if I would be allowed entry and was told that no because I was an anden are not allowed to wear open toes.
I am a retired Firefighter/Paramedic and over the many years have run a nber of emergency calls inside this dive. I have aways in the past interacted with a on duty manager. I asked to speak to that parson ad was told no the security person would not get the manager on duty because he didn't have to. I asked where this supposed dress code was posted so someone might know about it before being denied entry however no dress code is posted in the club or on a website or social media. It is simply not posted at all.
I am surprised that a club known to be inclusive or those people who practice alternative lifestyles would actively discriminate against anyone. But that was certainly what happened and when questioned about it both the woman taking the cover charge as well as the unsavory security person that both stated that yes this type of discrimination as well as that toward...
Read moreI’m ok with enjoying karaoke with friends. But as a black business owner I’m not a fan of having staff making sure I can pay the cost of my tab especially when the business I own is less then two blocks from this establishment. I would not of came into the establishment if I could not afford too. Furthermore i am not a fan of your staff embattling myself or my group of friends for any reason at all. Furthermore if you felt there is an issue with our groups why not communicate ? Why not just be civil and ask some basic questions? However if you feel your patronage is best served as white only then say so. But when your staff ask if I’m new to the establishment and my business has been located up the street from your for over a year and I’ve been consistent in my patronage outside of my travels that should tell you there is a fundamental issue. If you can’t recognize someone who has been in your business time and before and you have cause for generic aggravations then why pursuit ? Under the federal rules of civil procedure I will gladly sue if I feel my rights have been trampled upon. So please ensure your staff recognizes groups of people who spend money with your company and Lyft or Uber to enjoy the time they have off of work instead of embattling the patrons who help your business to...
