It had been a good while since I've had such a negative dining experience and I will be avoiding this place in the future to prolong my next streak of positive dining experiences. We were forgotten about by the hostess while waiting for an available table. Our waitress was slow to arrive at our table to take our beverage/ food order (5 min). After another 7 minute wait she returned with the beverages (coffee & water) and informed us that she had lost our order. We remade our order then enjoyed another extended wait. I tasted the coffee and quickly discovered it was slightly burnt, so I ended up doubling down on the cream and sugar after several unsuccessful attempts to get our waitresses' attention.
10 minutes more went by before we got our appetizers. We were left by ourselves for the next 15 minutes while our main plates were being worked on in the kitchen. During this time, we couldn't help but feel awkward as personal drama between the various waitresses was put on full display behind the counter. We tried to distract ourselves with our phones until our food finally arrived. We were so thankful when the food did finally arrive, I but even that gratitude was short lived. The burgers we ordered were an absolute mess, with the hamburger "patties" being little more than loose meat chunks that slipped out of the bun upon any attempt to pick it up. I can speak well of the seasoned fries that we got as a side, I they were the only thing that wasn't disappointing about our visit.
Roughly 3/4 of the way completed with our fallen-apart burgers, our waitress stops by for the first time to refill our beverages. She pulls two carafes off of burners and empties the last of their contents to fill my cup with more aromatic burnt coffee. This cup, along with the rest of our plates, went completely untouched for the next 15 minutes as we waited for our ticket to be delivered. We hurriedly paid the ticket off and got out of there.
With the many different breakfast/ brush options that Overland Park has to offer, I there isn't any reason not to treat yourselves to a better dining experience. I advise caution in choosing to eat here and will not be making that mistake myself again...
Read moreI love this Denny's. We always have a great experience when my family eats here. My daughter chose this as her favorite restaurant for her birthday earlier this year! I am gluten free. The wait staff at this Denny's has always been so accomodating. They have a gluten free english muffin they always offer to brown on the grill instead of risking cross contamination in their toaster where they make regular toast/english muffins. And it comes out golden brown and warm. Delicious! After a huge disappointment the day before at a local bar and grill...where they took my order for the gluten free bun on my cheeseburger seriously, but didn't seem educated enough to know that means I am NEVER going to order flour fried onions on the very same burger! No one would ever do that. I was very impressed with Myah our Denny's waitress yesterday. She took the whole thing very seriously and I thanked her for it. Myah was very sweet, professional, patient with my 2 crazy daughters, just great! She is a gem to have working there. I have never had a bad or even a kinda bad experience at the Metcalf Denny's. Thanks Myah. From the bottom of my heart. I don't want to be gf, or doing it because it is a fad or whatever. I have to be gf because I can no longer digest foods containing gluten or derived from wheat or barley. Even malt in most beers and some chocolate. I have rheumatoid arthritis and have trouble swallowing and have to take a benadryl sometimes, if I eat something without realizing it contains wheat, gluten, etc. Mostly it is just cross contamination nowadays because I have educated myself. But it is worth mentioning that a local bar and grill that is supposed to have the best brunch on Sundays or whatever is written on the huge banner they have draped across the ceiling, is worse than a chain 24 hour breakfast place. Don't knock Denny's till you try it! The people is what make a place successfull, doesn't matter if it is a chain. Myah...
Read moreDowngrading previous high grade...the place has gone way down from being one of our favorites for senior breakfast food. Senior omelet was scrambled eggs cooked on flat grill, folded, sprinkled with cheese and served on a bed of overdone bacon pieces mixed with hash browns, no sign of sausage that was requested. Nothing inside the folded eggs. Men's bathroom: toilet in the only stall was clogged with toilet paper and feces in urine and water mix.. Manual flush was unsuccessful at clearing the clog. Bathroom sink faucet is very corroded, with metal eaten away. Functional, but had dirty areas around it. Obviously new waitress had to be called back after serving us drinks to provide silverware & paper napkin, and blamed the lack of utensils on another waitress (who had graciously seated us when our waitress was befuddled with the cash register/card reader for another customer). Entryway appearance is one of faded glory. The kick plate at the inside front door has badly-peeling paint exposing raw wood, giving the appearance of nobody caring about the appearance. The ticket left on our table has instructions for me to hand print tip amount, add to a total and present to cashier (manned by our waitress). The cash register has screen a requiring the customer to enter the tip when paying by credit card. She didn't know the ticket asked for tip also nor did she know why. I guess I'm expecting too much. My wife said her senior scrambled eggs were not as good as previous visits.
We both independently decided to not return to this Denny's that is approximately 68 blocks from our home in South Overland Park. We might try a new one if Denny's ever builds one in southern Overland Park...
