Small dive in the middle of commercial Overland Park serving some good non-commercial Mexican, next to it's own grocery store. It's good to see places do more than just beef or chicken tacos and burritos. And, of course, El Fogon would. They're anti-commercial Mexican enough that they do NOT have ground beef.
Pluses on the food? Barbacoa is beef (nice). Had a great flavor too. Fresh. Maybe a bit light in the burrito, but good otherwise. The beans and rice were fantastic in the burrito too. Usually places dont care about these ingredients and they are low quality. Not here. It really added to the meal.
Steak meat had a great seasoning and makes for great tortas or tacos.
The dining area was a bit small and cramped. I banged into a chair at another table a couple of times. Might be nice to have the store and restaurant run together. They were walled off though. They need just a bit more space to be comfortable.
Service was fine. On the plus side, food was out quick. They had self-service salsa. On the negative side, the Chips and Salsa order ($2.99) felt a bit light. It's a small carton to begin with, but it was maybe 2/3 full.
All around good place to get a bite with decent ambience. 4.33 and we'll...
Read moreThis is my go-to for delicious Mexican food. The tacos and diablitos (basically a tostada) are fantastic. Their fajita platters are a nice change of pace, served with some of the best charro beans I've had. As we go more, I appreciate their food more. El Fogón is a consistent favorite for our family.
Update 12/2022 - still love it. Still our go-to. Service is fast & friendly. It's no-frills but muy delicioso!
Counter service is friendly and they do a pretty good job with takeout orders. My big "complaint" with the takeout orders is that I usually get more salsa than I can use.
Speaking of salsa, they have a wide array of salsas, ranging from very mild to extremely, "involuntarily say bad words out loud in the restaurant" hot. Seriously. I've seen it happen! They also have a condiment bar with all of those sauces as well a few veggies like radishes and pickled jalapeños.
Side note: The queso dip is not what you'd expect. I can best compare it to ballpark nacho cheese. It's not bad but probably not what you're expecting when you see queso dip on a Mexican restaurant menu.
The dining room is well-lit and there's usually a table open. I recommend finding a seat if you are waiting on a to-go order. There's not a great place to stand and wait.
Overall, I highly recommend El Fogón if you...
