I like Kofenya, but the place is pretty filthy and hasn't improved over the last year that I've been coming here. Look under the tables and counters and in the corners - there's dust and bits of trash and food everywhere. The tables are always covered in hand prints, crumbs, and/or grease. Occasionally, I have come in to see something like a muffin wrapper on the floor that's still there when I return a few days later. Bathrooms are even worse.
If they're not regularly cleaning the public areas, I have little confidence that they're sufficiently cleaning the kitchen, coolers, and beverage equipment on a regular basis. It's to the point that I don't order any food aside from baked goods and ask for no ice in cold drinks (ice makers get gross very fast without regular attention). I would stop coming here if there were any other option in town besides Starbucks.
I'm leaving this review because I want them to do better. They source from local/semi-local roasters and generally make a good cup of coffee. I've worked in bars and restaurants in the past, and our duties always included regularly wiping tables throughout the day and substantial cleaning at close, including sweeping, mopping, spraying and wiping bathroom surfaces, moving furniture if necessary, etc. It was built into our schedule and didn't take that much time unless it was an unusually busy day.
I know Kofenya has been around for a while now, so as a relatively new transplant to the area, I don't know whether it has been this bad beyond the past year. I hope the management establishes some new cleaning...
Read moreDuring my time at Miami, I frequented Kofenya because they have good coffee (and usually a couple good brews on hand), nice staff, and theoretically space to study/do work. And I try to support local coffee when I can instead of Starbucks (plus the Starbucks in town is super tiny + always packed).
To be honest, though, the place is getting a little shabby. Lots of the furniture has seen its glory days and some of the chairs are duct-taped where there are holes in the upholstery. I'm all about the shabby/casual cafe atmosphere, but I think it's time the owners invest a little back into the place. It's past its prime.
Also: the internet SUCKS. Especially if it's busy. If you have a lot of stuff to do online or need semi-fast browsing speeds, prepare to be massively disappointed. And if you're trying to download/upload anything at all, forget it. This is such a bummer too! Because I really like this place...
AND during finals week they're open 24 hrs...
Read moreI really enjoy the vibe of this place; it's really a great spot to get homework done and just relax. The baked goods I've had are okay. The cinnamon roll has been the best by far, but the drinks are where I'm really disappointed. Every drink I've had, except for the very first one, were gross. I've tried getting a matcha a couple times, and I don't believe they make it properly. The drink is always way more grainy than it should be which seems like they're not properly mixing it before adding milk. I tried getting a caramel apple cider, and what I got was a chai? I've gave this place a shot several times now, and I think I'll just...
