Disclaimer: I went only a few weeks after opening so I fully expect (and truly hope) Tico's to improve as they get their feet under them with this new location.
Our hostess recommended the cheese sticks as an appetizer, but we were surprised when they arrived as they were basically small frozen cheese sticks like you would get from the grocery store. I was expecting something a bit more hefty and handmade from a steakhouse. They were not bad, just not impressive.
We were also surprised that they didn't have a cocktail menu. If Tico's wants to compete with the other premium restaurants in Oxford, it better get serious about the bar. The drinks we ordered were good, but they are well below every other restaurant around them with their selection.
Their menu was also pretty limited. No real variations with smaller or larger cuts of a steak ex: 8 oz filet vs a 10 oz.
The most disappointing thing about our meal was the fact my New York strip steak arrived severely undercooked (Rare vs Medium Well) and I had to send it back. It was the second time in my life I have ever returned anything to the kitchen. My wife ordered her filet medium and it arrived well done.
For a 200+ meal, the steaks should be delivered as prepared. The table next to us also had all 4 of their steaks delivered at the wrong temperature. Hopefully they will get the kitchen staff trained and this will be better.
Lastly, hopefully they will allow online reservations in the near future as having to call in to book a table is much harder than booking online, something the other oxford premium restaurants do.
This review may be critical, but I provide this feedback in hoping that Tico's improves as nothing would make me happier than for it to succeed as Oxford doesn't have a true steakhouse and we deserve one. The Grillhouse needs to go the way of the dodo, so I truly hope they get serious about catering to the Oxford market as it is going to be different than what caused them to be successful in Jackson.
We will return in a few weeks and hope that our next experience it...
Read moreThis was my worst dining experience ever. This review could be taken as extremely picky or having unrealistic expectations - it is truly insane how horrible the food was, especially for the price.
My husband’s birthday was this past Sunday - so we went to Ticos with a good friend to celebrate. It took about 10 minutes at the hostess stand to be greeted. Once we were seated, we asked for a cocktail menu - they don’t have one, but they do have wine list.
We started with the cheese sticks. It took around 45 minutes to get them. They were pale, cold, and tasted very unremarkable. Like the ones you would get in a high school cafeteria. I order the blackened pork chop with sautéed mushrooms. My husband ordered the large filet cooked medium with a loaded baked potato. Our friend ordered the blackened pork chop with broccoli au gratin.
A picture of my pork chop and mushrooms are attached, it came undercooked - it had to be sent back. The “sauteed” mushrooms were like a soup - basically boiled? They were not good.
My husband’s steak came back rare. He had to send it back. His potato was off - he had 3 bites of it.
Our friend’s pork chop was also undercooked and had to send it back. The broccoli au gratin was the worst smelling and tasting thing I’ve ever tried in my whole life. She sent it back without a replacement.
We were sent complimentary desserts, very very sweet gesture by our waitress, but they were mediocre and tasted like the pies you can buy at the freezer section of a grocery store.
Our waitress was very kind and gave us 10% off of our tab.
I will never be back, it makes me sick how much we spent for such a disappointing experience which was meant to be a...
Read moreThe bar service sucked. Ordered old Faulkner signature cocktail waited forever. When we ordered appetizer ordered another. Drink was good. I got the second drink about the time they asked if we wanted desert. We were seated by the bar not that busy. Waitress was apologizing whole time about not getting my drink..
The steaks were very good as well as the sides. Rate them a 5 but wife got grouper and it was terrible. When waitress asked how it was wife said ok. Waitress asked again wife said it was frozen. She was going to check with manager. Never mentioned again. On way home she said worse fish she ever had. I wish she would have said in restaurant but wants to avoid controversy.
I know you say it’s a steak house but over last 30 to 40 years been to Ticos in Ridgeland and had fish and other seafood and always great.
I still can’t believe Tico Hoffman would associate with such bad seafood. Always top class and lowered standards in Oxford to near the bottom.
If you want to try do quickly because with frozen catch of the day and poor bar service they will not last long.
Ticos has been a favorite for 30 or 40 years and I am afraid we need a new place to eat.
When we spent 200 plus for 3 expect better service and fresh fish.
Tico would be ashamed to provide this service...
