We absolutely loved this place! We decided on getting a bunch of different appetizers to try a little bit of everything and we were very impressed with the taste and quality of the food along with the lovely ambiance and friendly waitstaff. The place doesn't get too loud either so that's a bonus!
You are served fresh, soft, sweet bread with a jam butter and honey butter when you sit down. It's all quite sweet so if you don't like a lot of sweets you might not like this.
My favorite dish here is the lamb lollipops appetizers served over their fried tobacco onions. The lamb was tender, juicy, had a little bit of spice and some sweetness to it from the cabernet molasses reduction, which I have to say was absolutely delicious! The tobacco onions were the best fried onions that I have ever had, they were flavorful, perfectly crispy and were addictive.
We also loved the fried button mushrooms, it comes with a heaping pile, it could be an entire meal. The mushroom batter was so flavorful and the mushrooms inside were juicy. It is served with a buttermilk ranch was also very good.
I tried the hand-cut cheese sticks and they were delicious! They're absolutely massive and you are served 5 sticks with a very light, but tasty, bredding. The marinara was okay and seemed canned, not too much flavor going on with it.
We also tried the jumbo lump crab cakes, which were definitely not jumbo lump. The crab cakes were okay, they seemed to have been seasoned with an old bay type spice. There were onions and peppers in the crab cakes and they tasted a bit sour making me wonder if they add lemon to it. These were okay but being from Maryland these definitely missed the mark and were not as described.
I also had the bacon wrapped shrimp, you are served 6 shrimp with lightly salted melted butter on the side. These were okay, the bacon is just salt & peppered and it doesn't seem that they did any seasoning on the shrimp so I found it a bit bland. Besides that, the shrimp and the bacon were cooked perfectly. This could be a good dish for someone who wants low sodium.
Fried green tomatoes were served under the crab cakes but I did not like them. The breading was very gritty making me think that they are probably breaded with corn meal.
The seasoned fries were thin, skin on, kinda greasy and just okay. The fries didn't seem to be seasoned except by a tasteless parmasean? Some fries were soft, and some were tiny and crispy. We didn't really eat many of them.
The one dish I do not recommend here, and I did see it in other reviews, is the smoked gouda mac & cheese. It was awful, watery and lacked any flavor whatsoever.
I tried the blueberry lemon drop and it was fantastic, I definitely recommend giving it a try if you drink and like lemon and blueberry.
Overall I feel like this place is pretty good, their breading has to be some of the best...
Read moreABSOLUTE worst dining experience we’ve ever had! Our dinner was a bit delayed, but we completely understand how difficult it is to run a restaurant during these trying times. We waited patiently for our food and while waiting, started to enjoy a bottle of Liberty School. Shortly after our steaks arrived, our waitress confiscated our wine in a very rude manner. She proceeded to explain to us that MS law states that there cannot be any open alcohol after 9pm on Sunday. We understand that the restaurant has to follow the laws of the state, however, we were not told about this law when we ordered the bottle of wine. When we asked our extremely rude waitress of should could send her manager over, she rudely replied that she was the manager! As manager, she should have the foresight to make customers aware of this law when they order a bottle wine on Sunday evenings. She rudely said that we were told by the hosts on our way in...we definitely were not! When the manager/rude waitress confronted the hosts in front of us, the hosts lied about telling us on our way in, then the manager ripped our plates away from us and took our dinner away. While she was bagging our food to go, the host’s apologized to us very discreetly for not telling us about the rule on our way in. When I told the manager the host had confided in us that she knew she hadn’t told us about the law on our way in, the host lied again and said she definitely did. In 21 years of dining together about 4-5 nights per week, every week, in restaurants all over the the Counrty and world, we have never had a more miserable dining experience! We are very easy going, and rarely ever complain, much less take the time to post a review. We completely understand things happen. The so called “manager” shouldn’t be in any position where she has to interact with customers. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to my...
Read moreI have dined here 4 times in the past 3 months. I have been working here in Oxford on a temporary job contract so I eat out often. What do I like about Oxford Grillehouse? The food is excellent. I have ordered both filet and the catfish Mary which are both excellent dishes. I have no complaints at all about the food quality. What do I not like? The Bar service does not meet the expectations one would have when dining in a restaurant of this caliber. We usually sit at the bar so if you typically dine at a table you may not notice the inexperienced bartenders. The last 2 times we had a young and obviously new bartender. The couple next to me ordered a martini. His response was we are out of martinis. Huh? Yes we ran out of triple sec. I was just as confused as the couple sitting next to me. However he was very nice and I gave him a pass on his inexperience. However last night we had a different bartender. She was not that nice. She was obviously overworked and not in a good service minded mood. The couples on either side of me were not happy with her and we ultimately decided to leave after a round of drinks. A meal here can run close to 200/couple if you are having drinks. It is very clear to me that the bar is not on the level that meets expectations when dining at this establishment. My wifes glass of wine was obviously old. It was sour and had such a horrible smell I thought I was going to get sick for a moment. We could have sent it back but with all that was going on we decided to just cash out. So to conclude the food is great but if you are more into the bar setting then try somewhere else. (City Grocery upstairs) Any "Nice bar" with Rex Goliath bottles of wine prominently displayed shows me they really need a new wine rep. And if you don't know what Rex Goliath is.. go to the grocery store and look for the cheapest bottle of...
