Food here is delicious, and there are so many options to choose from (as far as a crepe place can offer): breakfast and lunch/dinner crepes (add a salad); fruity crepes and parfaits; OATMEAL CREME BRULEE; salads, soups, and apps; and a slew of beverages, including espresso-based coffee options, smoothies, and many more. Decor is minimal, with money concentrated on beautiful, rustic stone/concrete(?) table slabs and wood chairs, but don't be disheartened. The savory crepe, oatmeal brulee, and cappuccino I tried here would make me return on future trips for more.
I drove here with the intent to order a fruity crepe, but ended up ordering a savory crepe and the oatmeal creme brulee, and am I glad I did! The Mighty Colorado was indeed chockful of hearty ingredients- hash brown potatoes, scrambled eggs, spicy black beans, black olives, cheddar, and feta- but it needed the spicy sour cream to tie all the ingredients up to satisfying, flavorful bites. You get to choose from eight sauces, with six made in-house (ranch and pesto aren't). While this dish alone could send me trekking for hours, I wanted to have something sweet to end my grand adventure, so I moved on to the oatmeal brulee-- oh, yeah! Bananas, pomegranate, raspberries, blueberries, and steel-cut oatmeal, all topped with brown sugar and half-and-half bruleed? Thoughts of a sweet crepe were forgotten with my first spoonful! The "brulee" referred to the top being lightly scorched- you may be able to see some dark spots on top of the creamy layer. No trademark crisp-break you would expect after tapping your spoon onto a creme brulee dessert, but still a delicious bowl of well-made oatmeal Goldilocks would love (not too mushy; not partially-cooked), topped with half-and-half, brown sugar and fruits, and then bruleed. I found the raspberries to be a bit too tart, as they naturally are, so I ate around them. I didn't see nor tasted any blueberries... Next time, I'll just ask to omit the raspberries and give me more of the rest, and yes, I want blueberries! I definitely recommend.
Small cappuccino came with two shots of espresso was lovely. I ordered mine made with whole milk. There will be a long wait, as there is only one cashier and one cook, but it will be worth it. A table of five left after a long wait at their table-- they didn't know they were supposed to approach the counter to order! I feel bad that no one else in my family wanted crepes (they opted for Denny's), because I think they missed out on this...
Read moreWhat I liked about Canyon Crepes...the crepes. What I didnt like... everything else. The food was good. The cream cheese sauce was delicious but don't dare dream impossible dreams like requesting it be on the side. I think Seinfeld might know a cousin of theirs making soup in New York. We arrived to a crowded area of nobody save one table of four who already appeared to have their food. My sister walked in first a few minutes in front of us. She asked for a latte to which the woman replied she could pay for it then or wait until everyone arrived. My sister told her she thought they might like to start our order because there were a few of us but that if she really needed her to she would pay separately. The cashier responded it would be easier if the whole party was here and ordered together. That was fine even if it was a little strange. The crepes say you pick 5 of the toppings to build your own. I asked for chocolate sauce and cream cheese sauce on the side. I was told no. The customer service was not exactly warm and fuzzy throughout our time but this? I explained that I don't like the sauce to seep into the crepe and I would really appreciate it on the side since I had never tried it before and wasn't sure if I liked it. In a nice gesture she did get me a spoon to try. I then said I liked it but just prefer it not soak my crepe. I let her know it was fine to not use any container for it but just smear it on the side of the same plate. She said no because, I'm not kidding word for word quote, "if we give it to you on the side you will waste it and throw it away." I let her know that I appreciated her concern but my food is mine to enjoy as I pay for it and would appreciate letting me worry about it's where abouts. She and mystery, no sides cook in the back, took 45 minutes to make 2 lattes 1 espresso and 4 crepes and we were the only order. By the way, the sauce did not, after all that battle, come on the side. It came smeared both together all over the top so guess they got me there and no surprise, I didn't like it like that. Had the coffee's been started sooner than 10 minutes after the order was placed and there was a whole lot of nothing happening, like say starting the coffee's when we came in and sat down, the flow probably would have gone smoother. If the help is replaced with competent, freindly people it would likely be an excellent...
Read moreWe arrived at 7:50 am to ensure we got in early and got out to start our day. They did not open the door until 8:10 am and when they did, there was only one girl working. We specifically chose this restaurant because of their gluten free crepes (which were heavily advertised online). After one member of our group ordered a gluten free crepe, they were out. With limited options beyond the gluten free crepe, another member of our group had to get a bowl with just the insides of the crepe. They were charged full price for 1/2 the food and the bowl was cold when it arrived at the table. They also had no coffee prepared, yet they let us order coffee. We were first in line. In addition to their unprepared food supply, the staff had a poor attitude and service was incredibly slow. When we mentioned that they had limited option if they font have gluten free crepes and that they should not advertise gluten free options if they don't have them prepared, the cashier/server said "well we have salads. You could eat a salad"... she was short and snippy about every little thing. When we asked about coffee after 20 minutes she retorted "I'm working on it". By 8:40 additional workers had arrived. There was still no coffee and the staff had only just stared making it. Mind you the coffee is a self service station with a drip craf. By this point the cafe was full and other customers were starting to get irritated as well. One customer ordered a cappuccino and rather than making the drink the cashier/server continued to take orders and back up service. It took her 20 minutes to get the ladies cappuccino. We got our food at 8:55 am, 45 minutes after ordering. By the time we left at 9:10, the second group to come in still had not gotten their food.
Needless to say, despite great reviews, we had an awful experience and I am sure every customer in the cafe that day would say the same. I would like to give the girls working the benefit of the doubt, they were understaffed or didn't expect people at 8 am (when they open). But, too many factors resulted in an all together awful experience. I do not recommend the Canyon Crepes Cafe to anyone Gluten Free, groups looking to eat in under an hour or even two probably if you aren't the first group to order, or anyone looking for any...
