Just started going to this coffee shop. First visit was great. We got croissants and they were amazing. Second visit, they were very burnt. Bottoms were black and you could only eat the middle. Third visit they were slightly better but a bit overdone. I decided to give them ANOTHER chance and went in today to see how the croissants looked. I asked to see the bottom of the lightest croissant and it was black so I said “oh that’s too burnt. No thank you.” And I left. I decided to call in to speak to someone with a simple question of “is there anyway the croissant could be less overdone/burnt?” These are the same croissants that are used to make a ham and cheese sandwich and I can’t imagine re-toasting them. They would turn to dust! The “owner” started getting defensive and I explained it wasn’t a dig, and it was coming from a genuine place, because we LOVE their baked goods (at least we loved the first one we had). She stated that my interaction with her staff was rude. Not sure how a question and a “no thank you” is rude? Then she got upset saying that me calling to “complain” has made it worse when I was literally just calling with a request because the items they’re serving are inedible. Burnt food items are higher in carcinogens and you’d think that the owner would be more open to this request, especially since it is health related. The last thing my chronically ill partner needs is food that makes her even sicker.
Overall disappointed with the quality of the food, and the interaction with the “owner”. She complained that she’s low on staff and it’s honestly not a shock that she can’t retain employees when she talks to customers the way she does. I can’t imagine how she treats her staff.
I hope things turn around because this seems like a cool shop and I was excited to find a local business that sells real croissants. I just simply don’t want to eat burnt food. It’s a bummer that request was too much to ask for. I’m curious to see what kind of retort the owner makes on this review. I’ve never made a bad review before so I think this shows how uncomfortable and unprofessional this interaction was.
Update: I never did end up going back to try this shop again. I found another bakery, Angela’s bakery a block away on Park & 14th and we go there 2-3 times a week. Their pastries are incredible and they have so much variety and it’s run by the sweetest family who have been nothing by kind an accommodating if we have questions...
Read moreCame in the morning and had a nice breakfast and mediocre coffee. Walked by later in the evening and saw they were still open. When we approached the host asked about a reservation. We didn't have one. He told us he hoped they wouldn't lose our business if he turned us away. One person in our party joked that they might. So the host told us seriously that in that case we are not welcome. I told him she was joking and we walked away. My companion walked back and told him he was rude to her and then walked away. Two minutes later the host and a woman (both with no masks) walked around the block to where we were and yelled at us and told us to "go back where we came from" that we had "harshed their vibe". Honestly, nobody even noticed our interaction and if they hadn't followed us around to yell and make a scene it would have been forgotten. It was a small misunderstanding and they blew it up because they had to prove..... Something? I hope we just caught them on a bad night. But if this is the reaction to perceived slights then I recommend people avoid this place. Certainly don't joke around with them.
(We realized that this place took over for the other Amsterdam Coffee. My friends had been coming to the previous place for years before they closed and they thought this was the same place. They couldn't believe the treatment from a business they had been patronizing for so many years. We realize now that it's not the...
Read moreI strolled into Amstrdm piano house on a gloriously chilly February morning. I had one thing on my mind: eggs. I have spent years searching for the heftiest egg sandwich in San Luis Obispo county and truthfully, I was ready to give up. Hundreds of diners, coffee shops, and cafes left with empty stomachs and broken hearts. And then, everything changed.
As I sat down in the glorious open-air piano house, truthfully, my expectations were low. Right smack dab in the middle of the worst egg crisis to hit our country in generations, finding an egg sandwich of suitable heft and mass is harder than ever. Then, it happened.
I was deep in conversation about the various types of tunas and their unique swimmings styles when I was presented with a double bacon cheeseburger-sized offering. My jaw dropped. I took out my egg sandwich scale and clocked this puppy at 1.82 pounds. By my estimations, AMATERM Piano House is likely using 5-7 eggs per sandwich. This is it folks. This is IT.
Right in the heart of Paso Robles is a coffee house that dreams big. A coffee house that isn’t afraid to defy industry norms and toss 3-4 extra eggs on a sandwich. And to do so while chicken populations have plummeted to prehistoric lows, you cannot help but smile. Finally, an egg sandwich you can order straight off the menu! Gone are the days of asking for 5 extra eggs just to get a taste of the good life.
Run, don’t walk, to AMSTRDM. It will...
