Anchoring a corner of Reading Terminal Market, Beiler's Bakery emerges not just as a haven for donut aficionados but as a storied chapter in the rich tapestry of Philadelphia's culinary scene. Founded by the Beiler family, who brought their Amish heritage and a penchant for handcrafted baked goods to the heart of the city, this bakery has risen from its humble beginnings to national fame. With deep roots that trace back to their Amish origins, the Beilers have turned traditional baking into a form of art, where each donut is not just made but lovingly crafted with the kind of care and quality that has become a rarity in our fast-paced world. This backdrop of tradition and dedication is palpable, from the friendly, warm service reminiscent of a simpler, communal way of life, to the wide variety of donuts that are among the best you'll ever taste. It's clear why Beiler's has been lauded as one of the top donut purveyors in the country. From the dreamy Boston Crème, filled with luscious Bavarian crème and topped with decadent chocolate icing, to the classic allure of the Cinnamon Sugar donut, each offering at Beiler's is a testament to the mastery and passion behind its creation. The Glazed donut, with its cloud-like dough and perfectly sweet, melt-in-your-mouth icing, the seasonal charm of the Harvest Apple, the innovative delight of Peanut Butter Crème, and the bold, savory-sweet combination of Maple Bacon, all reflect the Beiler family's commitment to quality, variety, and innovation. Beiler's Bakery, with its rich history and commitment to the art of donut making, is more than just a place to grab a quick treat. It's a destination where every bite tells a story of heritage, craftsmanship, and the joy of sharing good food with a community that appreciates it. So, when you find yourself at Reading Terminal, let Beiler's Bakery take you on a delicious journey that's steeped in tradition and bursting with flavor. It's not just a donut; it's a piece of Philadelphia's heart, served up with a smile and a sprinkle of Amish magic.

Beiler's Donuts appears to be an Amish (or at the very least Dutch) donut place. The donuts definitely appeared fresh and made frequently through the day. If you're looking for variety, then you've come to the right place. Lots of fillings, toppings, and styles (cake, yeast, long, and round). They have the traditional flavors and ones like PB&J and salted caramel. The price is right. All typical donuts are $1.20, which is slightly higher for regular donuts, but a good price for the fancier donuts. The wait can be grueling at or about breakfast and lunch. Be prepared for a 5 minute wait at these times. But the good news is they seem to be always stocked. I had two donuts: sour cream and apple fritter. The sour cream was of superior flavor and while moist, not dense. I would like more crunch, but the sweetness was on point. The fritter, which I know you all came to hear about, is above average. It is more of a yeast and less of a cake variety. The cost is good. The flavor was very good, with strong, fresh apple flavor paired with a soft, fluffy texture. I like more crunch in my fritter, but the donut wasn't too doughy either. The volume was slightly below average, being smaller than a typical fritter.

PT. 3 Reading market. Before I left I got 1/2 dozen donuts. They were good. I am from Seattle and the donuts taste a bit different out waste. I say it is the water, but I am more partial to donuts in the west. This was on my return trip from up the road adventures. From there we meander the market, laughing and enjoying the commotions going on. That was fun, bring $$$, allot of fresh meat that are probably fresher than a normal market and better. Steve and Deb had been a few days at hotel a block away, so they visited many of the sights, however we 3 amigo’s found part of Chinatown, and the African American museum. The museum is a bit thin on material, but for historical has some thought-provoking displays. Were a bit older now, Deb and Steve both retired, don’t move as fast, Deb recovering from one knee. But I so enjoyed the company and memory lanes. I forgot how poor we were back then, and Steve and Deb marrying on 25 cent rings from the gum machines. True and they are happier and stronger as a couple. I admire this, as marriage eluded my dreams and perhaps that is life for me. 😊

Perhaps one of the most over hyped donut places I've ever read about.

Any thread or inquiry as to what the best donuts in Philadelphia are leads to Beiler's. As someone who has traveled far and wide across the nation and world to find the best donuts, I had to make a trip over to taste their wares.

I was expecting some Amish folk to be manning the stations but it was just some Latinos such as myself doling out the dough so to speak. I tried 6 different donuts (I didn't eat all 6, I'm not a diabetic...yet) but of the 6 I had, I would say 2 delivered (glazed and vanilla), 1 was good (apple fritter), 1 was decent but grocery store-tier (pumpkin) and 2 were nearly inedible (chocolate frosted and Boston cream).

While they certainly all carried a certain rustic quality, there was a quirky elasticity to the dough that robbed them all of a light, airy feeling and gave them a somewhat gummy texture that I can't say I'm a fan of. The chocolate frosting they use is also so rich that it literally weighed down a few of the donuts and the glutenous architecture literally collapsed beneath its density.

All together, a few of their selection slap but the rest can bounce, I don't see myself journeying back...
