Fantastic food, great staff, decent location!
Myself and a half-dozen other friends called Oishii a few hours before arrival and asked if they had room for a 7-person table. They fortunately said 'yes'! An hour before our arrival, they called us and asked if we were certainly coming...an act which I thought was strange, but I will explain why it's not so strange in a moment...
We arrived for our lunch a few minutes early and noticed that this place is tiny! Not in a bad way, but in a "quaint-hole-in-the-wall" way. We then understood why they called to ensure our reservation—we took up 40% of the whole establishment! They wanted to make sure they weren't reserving nearly half of the restaurant for a group that wouldn't show. Good on ya!
Parking is a bit tricky if you're driving here... but it's right near Penn's Landing so it's VERY accessible. Expect to have to pay for parking or hunt down a curbside spot if you have a car. (You should probably just walk or take some public transit/uber)
Anyway, the FOOD! The food was spectacular!! Our (silent, but polite and attentive) server took our orders with lighting precision and we received food in half the time I was expecting! The sushi, though moderately-high-priced was delicious... and the ramen was incredible! I've had ramen in Center City Philly a dozen or so times, but this HAS to be my favorite that I've ever had.
All of the group had a great time, and we will very likely be coming here again in the future. THANK YOU Oishii Sushi & Ramen for hosting our...
Read moreI do not understand why this restaurant has mostly 5 star reviews.
I ordered gyoza ($8) and salmon teriyaki ($25) initially. I asked for tap water. Then, I was told that they don't serve tap water, so I had to order water ($2) at minimum or no liquid at all. So, I ordered "cold green tea" ($4), expecting some sort of home-made green tea. That turned out to be just a can of green tea (ooi ocha).
In Japan, gyoza is usually fried, but gyoza here is boiled (which was not bad). Salmon teriyaki (grilled salmon, rice, two boiled broccoli heads, and green leaves/ginger sauce) was just ok. I don't really think the meals were authentic or great for the price.
When I was eating, I noticed a public post which stated that paying with any card would accrue a 3.5% extra charge (only paying with cash would not). This fact should have been verbally stated when customers are provided with a menu. I probably would not have eaten here partly because I didn't have enough cash with me.
I was the only customer for the most part (I visited there on sunny Wednesday around 6pm). Another customer came in when I was paying.
I'm afraid I do not recommend this restaurant, especially if you are looking for authentic...
Read moreWow! This place rules, it’s the real deal and the humans cooking and serving are spectacular. Slightly hole-in-the-wall-ish, but this makes it even more special. Without all the bells and whistles and advertising that the trendier Ramen places spend their money on, Oishii focuses on quality, deliciousness and fast service to keep ‘em coming back for more. Remember the early days of Yelp, when your review could make a truly awesome but little known spot popular and successful? That’s how I feel about this place - it’s too good to go un-marveled and I just had to let y’all’s know. It’s covid times/apocalypse lite, so maybe get take out and...
