This is a hidden gem in Pittsburghâs Uptown neighborhood. At Divine Mercy Parish (Epiphany Church), Brother Andreâs CafĂ© is serving up delicious coffee drinks, hot and cold food items, pastries and, perhaps most importantly, an incredible mission. They are providing meaningful employment for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). If you look at their website, they share statistics on just how many people with IDD are able and want to work, but how few opportunities are available to them. That doesnât help these individuals or our society, and meeting the members of the staff here, seeing what a great job they are doing and how happy they are to contribute to the cafĂ© in a variety of ways, was fantastic.
Most importantly, though, no one is coming back to a place if the food and drinks arenât excellent, and these really were. I got a black and gold iced latte, which includes mocha and caramel, and it was delicious. It also had the adorable special touch of my barista noting that she hoped I enjoyed it on my cup. My grilled cheese sandwich was melty and gooey for a restaurant-quality cheese pull. Finally, I got a peanut butter and chocolate granola bar for some sweetness and protein. The sweets here are really good! You can get cookies by the dozen.
There is a substantial gift section that includes goods sourced from vulnerable communities in developing countries. If youâre interested in religious items they do have those here; I grew up Catholic and there were some truly beautiful art pieces. There is also Brother Andreâs apparel including beanies and sweatshirts, as well as candles, mugs and more. I got a reusable travel mug and several hand-drawn greeting cards, including birthday and Valentineâs Day. The cards look like they may have been created by staff members here and are adorable.
There is a lot of seating available and there was a good crowd during the lunch hour when I was here which was nice to see! There is a little bit of parking in the lot which is nice. This place really inspires a wonderful spirit of community and fellowship. They are opening a second location at Assumption Church in Bellevue soon are are now hiring for that one. This is a really...
Read moreI am in the office across the street 2 days a week, and I make sure to see the lovely folks over at Brother Andre's each morning because it brightens my day to start off with great and meaningful interactions with good people.
Brother Andre's combines a fantastic mission, with a fantastic product. The menu is ever changing with employee signature drinks which have been excellent and fun, but to me the measure of a good coffee place is what you can expect everyday. I have lovedthe drip flavors available and havw taken home the kcups more than a couple times for use at home. The hot food items are also a delight and very reasonably priced.
If you are anywhere close to Brother Andre's you should stop in. For good coffee and even...
Read moreGreat place for after mass. Quality of food and coffee is great atmosphere is much better than expected for what it is.
But,,,, Brotherâs has to start taking names for the orders. There is so much confusion every single time after mass. No one knows what they have and when orders come up the customers must talk to each other in order to not steal each otherâs drinks and food. Iâve stood at the pick up counter every weekend after my order and there is ALWAYS perpetual confusion on whoâs order is whoâs. Please just put the drink cups next to the cash register and write the name of the person who orders on them.
Organize your service. You currently have Annoying, unnecessary chaos after mass.
I love this...
