I had the unfortunate experience of dining at The Speckled Egg restaurant in Pittsburgh, and it was an absolute disaster from beginning to end. Not only was the food abysmal, but it was made abundantly clear that the owner's lack of competence is the root cause of this establishment's failure.
To start with, the food was a major letdown. The menu promised unique and flavorful dishes, but what we received was far from it. The appetizers were tasteless, and the entrees were overcooked and lacked any creativity. It was evident that the chef's talent, if there was any, was wasted on these uninspired and poorly executed dishes.
But the real problem lies with the owner. The lack of customer service and hospitality was nothing short of appalling. As a paying customer, I expect to be treated with respect and appreciation for choosing to dine at their establishment. However, the owner was nowhere to be seen during our visit, and it was apparent that their disinterest in the restaurant's success trickled down to the staff.
When we tried to address our concerns with a server, they seemed helpless and overwhelmed, clearly not empowered to resolve any issues. It was evident that the owner's lack of leadership and direction has resulted in a team of disengaged and unmotivated employees.
To make matters worse, we later discovered that the owner is notorious for responding to negative reviews with arrogance and defensiveness. Instead of taking constructive criticism as an opportunity for improvement, they resort to blaming customers or deflecting blame onto their staff. Such behavior is a clear indicator of a business owner who is unwilling to take responsibility for their own failures.
The Speckled Egg's dismal performance can be directly attributed to the incompetence of its owner. It's disheartening to see an establishment with so much potential squandered by someone who clearly lacks the passion and skill necessary to run a successful restaurant.
In conclusion, avoid The Speckled Egg at all costs. The owner's ineptitude has ruined what could have been a delightful dining experience. Pittsburgh is home to numerous outstanding restaurants, and it's best to direct your patronage elsewhere, where owners take pride in their establishments and strive to deliver exceptional service...

Read moreThe hostess came to the bar to grab me once I was seated to inform me that there was a wait. I asked for the bar? She gave an explanation as to why there was also a wait for the bar despite there being several open seats at the bar and open tables on the floor, not including an entire row of bar seats at an island. She claimed to have reservations at 10am on a Sunday- not after anything parties.
She snapped that the wait was 45 minutes and that she would page me. I recorded a few videos then asked for the manager who at first backed her up with “there may be empty chairs but that’s because we don’t want to slam the kitchen” is what his answer meant. Never heard of a restaurant risking money in order to not inconvenience its workers. He sat me in the very seat that I had attempted to sit in 10 minutes prior.
The seats beside me remained empty for all of my first specialty coffee and most of my second. The island remained bare.
The hostess who refused to give me her actual name was white, had very short hair and thin built. She was nasty and aggressive. The black girl working beside only grinned and avoided eye contact. She knew I would shame her.
My bartender had greeted me nicely and gave me good service from what I could tell so I still tipped him.
The hostess was still coming for me when I left the building, “ have a good day!”
That’s why I wrote this up outside of the restaurant because in an hour or so I will not care. I will not go back but...
