I came to town on business and saw Beanies as I headed to my hotel. As a fan of Mexican restaurants, I knew I would be stopping in before the week was out. Meeting Marcia's daughter Christa as one of my clients made it sooner rather than later.
Now, I am not expert on Mexican food but having lived in Texas for nearly 15 years means I have seen my fair share to know what is good and what is rubbish. I thought Beanies was rather good and don't understand some of the negative comments here. So here is my two cents worth...
First impressions are huge and it's going to have an sizeable impact on your patrons. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere struck me as fun, laid back and inviting. The hostess could have been friendlier but everyone has an off day now and again. Despite the initial subdued greeting, my waitress Hannah was bubbly, polite and a pleasure to talk with.
But very few people dine out for pretty decor and friendly employees, so let's talk food. I have joked for years with family and friends that the chips and salsa are a strong indicator of how the rest of your meal will go. Beanies started the meal off right! The salsa was like none I have had elsewhere and it was delicious.
For a main course I had the combination plate with shredded beef chimichanga and chile relleno. The chimi was heaven. The tortilla was crisp and light. The beef was moist and flavorful. I had mixed feelings on the chile relleno. It too had a crisp outer shell but it was covered with salsa verde and the whole thing became soggy before I finished it. I also found it didn't have quite the bite I am used to from a poblano. Even so, I enjoyed the taste overall.
There are complaints here that Beanies is overpriced. Compared to other restaurants in the same vicinity, I would say the prices are comparable to other offerings.
All in all, my experience with Beanies was pleasant and I would recommend this restaurant to any who ask.
(On a side note - you must have set a good example, Marcia. Both your daughter and grand-daughter are great people. I enjoyed meeting both of them during my...
Read moreServers, bartender, and atmosphere were great. Food was bland and way way overpriced considering quality of ingredients. Also this is (as stated in previous reviews) the epitome of Americanized NOT Authentic Mexican food. Food was bland, plate presentation showed me the cooks took no pride in their cooking.
I ordered the Loaded burrito for a whopping $17 because I figured there would be some good steak in the burrito. Indeed this was not the case. The quality of steak was on the lower end. The beef never seemed to have any red coloring to it, just brown. The steak was also not seared, or charred to get that good flavor. Reminded me of the US Beef salesmen that knocks on your door trying to sell you that questionable $150 box of beef with the brown tinge to it. I literally recieved the burrito on a white plate with a sprinkling of some kind of seasoning on the plate and burrito. No sides, nothing. The girlfriend got a ground beef taco which was not seasoned and a tamale that looked way past due, the shredded chicken looked like a dried out bird's nest. The best advice I can give to any cook is cook from fresh! Also I could swear I tasted freezer burn in my verde, that made me mad. Seemed like the kitchen was at the end of their order from the week before.
Otherwise as a local I hate giving negative reviews. I have been to this place about 8 years ago and didn't care for it because it was bland then. So I came back to retry and same results. As a mexican food lover I usually raise an eyebrow when I look at the menus and don't see things like carnitas, and al pastor. My final vote is there's not a good mexican joint in Ozaukee county. I will have to continue to venture to MKE and...
Read moreI’m in utter shock that this place is in business. The food is very UNauthentic Mexican food. Growing up in Texas, near the Mexico boarder, I have had plenty of great Mexican food and was looking forward to eating here as Mexican food is our family favorite. Not only was this food not true Mexican food, it was just bad. It was either bland and had no flavor or it was just nasty. I should have checked the reviews before deciding to eat here because it looks like others have had the same issues my family and I had here. The fact that some people actually enjoy the food is just mind boggling. I can only assume that they were drunk and their judgment was off. Also, it wasn’t just that the food was bad. The food was also extremely overpriced. Nothing is homemade. For these prices, I expected some great homemade Mexican food but it was just the opposite. Everything is straight from a box/can/bag. Save your time, money, and tastebuds and just go to Tellos down the street. That is actual authentic Mexican food that tastes amazing for good prices. We would have went there if it wasn’t closed. Never again, will we ever enter at this “Beanies” establishment. Absolutely disgusting. We couldn’t even finish our meals. After taking a couple bites, we threw in the towel. Not even my kids would eat their quesadillas or nachos. When we asked for the check, our sweet waitress noticed something was wrong and got the manager. The manager’s response to this was “well these are our recipes and other people like them. I will give you your meals half off since you didn’t eat them.” I will add that the manager was a bit rude but the waitress...
