Unforgettable Food, Unforgivable Treatment: A Disturbing Experience at Sushi 365
I visited Sushi 365 for the first time after seeing excellent reviews online, but I left deeply disturbed by the treatment I witnessed toward a member of their staff. While my meal itself was prepared exactly as I ordered it, the behavior I observed in the kitchen toward my waitress overshadowed everything and left me appalled.
I ordered a Crazy California Roll with non-spicy mayo instead of the standard spicy mayo, and my request was fulfilled perfectly. However, it became clear that something had gone wrong regarding the sauce in the kitchen before the food ever reached me. Perhaps the sushi chef forgot to use non-spicy mayo, and the waitress caught the mistake and requested it be corrected. Or perhaps the waitress forgot to communicate my request initially and asked for it to be remade. Regardless of what happened, my order came out exactly as requested, and I was completely satisfied. The issue, however, was what unfolded behind the scenes.
Throughout my meal, I heard the sushi chef screaming at the waitress. This wasn’t a quiet reprimand or a firm word—it was loud, relentless verbal abuse. What upset me particularly was that it appeared to be a woman yelling at another woman. In a time when women should be supporting and uplifting one another, it was disheartening to see such cruelty. But what shocked me the most was the complete lack of regard for the fact that I was sitting there, hearing everything.
This wasn’t something that was hidden or subtle. The yelling and berating happened in full earshot of the dining area. It seemed as though the chef believed that because I didn’t understand the language, I wouldn’t notice what was happening—or worse, that I wouldn’t care. But cruelty is unmistakable in any language. I sat there in disbelief, questioning what I was hearing. I thought, “There has to be some other explanation. No one would be this cruel to someone so publicly.” I was in such shock that I didn’t even think to record it.
When I finished my meal and went to check on the waitress, it was partly because I wanted to comfort her if what I thought was happening was really happening—but also because I hoped there was some other explanation. I hoped to find her calm and fine, maybe able to explain what I heard as a heated debate between staff members. Sadly, this was not the case.
The waitress, who had been serving me attentively all evening without any sign of distress, waited until after I had paid and was leaving before she crouched behind the counter and began sobbing. That’s when I found her. I approached to check on her, and when I held her hand to comfort her, she kept repeating, “It’s fine, it’s fine.” But it wasn’t fine. It wasn’t fine at all.
Even if there had been a mistake—though I don’t believe there was—nothing could justify the way she was treated. If management believes an employee’s mistake needs to be addressed, there are professional ways to do so. Publicly humiliating and verbally abusing someone is never acceptable. This kind of behavior shouldn’t happen in private, much less in the middle of a restaurant where customers can hear every word.
This experience left me shaken. While my food was fine, the toxic environment I witnessed behind the scenes completely overshadowed the meal. The sushi chef showed no regard for how her behavior might reflect on the business or how it would make customers feel. That kind of lack of professionalism is unacceptable.
Until Sushi 365 demonstrates that they value their employees and create a respectful work environment, I cannot recommend this restaurant. The waitress I encountered was wonderful, but no one deserves to endure what I witnessed that day. I urge others to consider whether they want to support a business that treats its...
Read moreI'm not sure where the 4.7 on Google Maps review comes from. If you simply see 365 Sushi as a creative roll joint, then yes, maybe it is worth the high reviews. But I also think this joint is a bit confused on what it wants to be. Are you gunning for a premier all-around sushi joint? Or is this just a bargain roll shop? And based on what they choose to be, they need to optimize their interior.
Weirdly, the interior tables are very sparse, with super high ceilings and a sakura tree. So it could probably be a high-end place. But then the utensil are cheap. The menu is geared towards rolls. Really confusing.
We ordered both a healthy selection of nigiri, sashimi, and rolls. For the rolls, boom, right on point. Clearly this was their "thing". For the sashimi and nigiri, I give it too them that they cut thick slices. But the fish wasn't spectabular or anything. And the way they made the nigiri was factory-like. This isn't some sushi made with passion but rather just a "make it as fast as possible" place.
If you are going into 365, take it as if you are entering a mid-low-end sushi shop that you go for rolls. Stick to the rolls and quick beer. Set your expectations low. And you might be...
Read moreOmg YUM. I eat sushi more than anyone I know but also travel a lot for work and finding regular spots in those cities has been a challenge. This place is located a block away from The Nines so very convenient - I dashed over right before closing and they were kind enough to take my order. I’m so glad I did, it was amazing!
Even though the environment is definitely more of a fast casual vs upscale restaurant, the menu had EXACTLY all my favorite things (which are salmon, scallop, and yellowtail). The Deep Sea Treasure roll has scallop on top of a salmon roll and Hamachi lover is yellowtail on yellowtail. Both were SO FRESH and DELICIOUS. Additionally - my favorite piece of nigiri is seared salmon - most places don’t do it and even more don’t do it well. You can get any nigiri seared here and the piece I ordered was absolutely delicious (some type of sauce was def seared into it). The prices are not cheap but they’re fair.. nothing you won’t be used to living in a city.
I almost never write reviews, especially right after an experience, but this place deserves all the business in the world! I’m now looking forward to my near-weekly trips...
